Title: Writing Seemed Off
Date: Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2020
Review: I love Ted Bell and the Alex Hawks series. I was excited the book was released and jumped right in for a new adventure. Unfortunately, I did not care for the two separate story lines, jumping back and forth and never bringing the two together except for the fact that it was dealing with a differ generation of the Tang family. Plus, sentences did not track and seemed out of place and at times redundant. My husband commented as well on the difference in the writing. I can honestly say I was bummed and disappointed.

Title: I am done with this Author
Date: Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2020
Review: Who wrote this story? Has Ted Bell gone on a long vacation? I have read all of Hawke's books from the very beginning and the last two books are not written by Ted Bell. There were times in this book I did not now what year it was and what was the connection between the two stories. As a matter of fact I did not see the link with one Tang being a good guy and the newer Tangs being despicable.
It would be wonderful if I could ask for my money back.
China Moon has been killed off and it is time for Alex to retire.

Title: A different take.
Date: Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2020
Review: I have read all the Alex Hawke books and I thought the last one was horrible. In fact I doubted Ted Bell had written much, if any of it. I was apprehensive about this novel, but I need not have been concerned. However true Alex Hawke fans may not agree with me as this novel is really 2 books in one with a very limited connection. Alex's grandfather is the hero of one part of the book going back to World War II and some time shortly after Pearl Harbor. We meet FDR, Winston Churchill, MI6 operations and a Chinese ambassador to the United States. These adventures take place between chapters of current times and Alex's story. Sometimes there are multiple chapters of the time span episodes, sometimes not. It does take some getting used to. I thought Alex's grandfather was an interesting character and an entire book could have been written about him during the World Ear II era. I thought the language and references from the WWII part of the story were excellent. As far as the current Alex adventures go, I found it interesting, good character development, and exciting page turning developments. Truthfully, I thought each main character could have stood alone for an entire novel. I would have preferred that scenario. Having said that, I still enjoyed the book, but would have wanted more pages devoted to the current Alex and his usual co-stars.

Title: Much improved
Date: Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2020
Review: I read all the prior Hawke books with keen interest until three ago when in that installment I was convinced that the author didn't write it, that possibly a few of his students did. I still hold that opinion. So I didn't read the next two and watched poor reviews pour in. I really loved the series and characters though so watched with interest as this book was published, ultimately taking the chance. This book is much improved! I now again hope for even more. This is the first dual generation timeline jump narrative I recall from this author and it did not disappoint. Both stories are independently interesting and have a point of parallelism. In many ways I liked the earlier in time story better. Of course I always enjoy a novel featuring the exploits of Commander Fleming, real and imagined. So this is a 5/4 thus 4 overall. Keep them coming.

Title: Not up to his usual standards
Date: Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2020
Review: This book in the Alex Hawke series is not, in my opinion, up to Ted Bell's usual standards.

First off this book is set in two different time frames - one being the present where we follow Alex Hawke, and the other being at the start of WWII where we follow Alex Hawke's grandfather Blackie and his pal Tiger Tang, the Ambassador to the United States from China. The author switches back and forth between these two time lines practically on a chapter by chapter basis. I do not like this style. I kept thinking, well, the author is telling these two stories and they are going to come together at the end of the book - (spoiler alert) they don't!

In the current time story - Alex Hawke is attacked and makes a swift recovery and then is dispatched to find the grandson of the queen (and Alex's godson) who is missing at an exclusive resort in the Bahamas. The details of this resort are enough to strain the imagination well beyond the breaking point.

In the WWII timeline, Blackie Hawke switches back and forth between being a diplomatic liaison in Washington DC, and being a member of the British Secret Service in active, behind the lines, action in Europe this hopping back and forth is, again, enough to strain the reader's imagination.

At least with the present story line, the author takes it to a conclusion, but not so with the WWII story line, we get an ending with the Ambassador, but not really with Blackie - they plant their explosives, but nothing about how they met back up with the other saboteurs and escaped, nor how their plot worked out. Fairly disappointing towards the end of the book.

Also, the author did not really do his homework, for example he has Blackie and Tiger getting drinks at the 1789 in Washington, DC in 1941 (page 19 Hardcover). Despite the name (which refers to year of the founding of Georgetown University) the 1789 was not around in 1941 - it was established by a couple of GU grads in 1960. Another is on page 45 where he refers to a Taser with 50,000 watts - the Taser has 50,000 Volts, not Watts. On page 355 the author has a Webley Mk VI, a revolver, being fitted with a sound suppressor - sorry Mr. Bell, that won't work as the gas will escape between the cylinder and the barrel - they have to have that gap for the cylinder to be able to revolve. That is why sound suppressors are only fitted onto semi-autos. (With the exception of the Nagant M1895 revolver with a special gas seal mechanism.)

Also, and I just cannot let this slide - the author his Blackie Hawke tell the Chinese Ambassador (in 1941) that the "beautiful minds" at Bletchley Park had broken the Enigma machine codes being used by the Germans. This would have been treason at the highest level to betray the "Ultra" Secret. This just would not have been done.

So, in addition to not liking the particular style used in this novel, I found all the errors, just too much to be able to really enjoy this novel - and thus the three stars.

Title: Getting worse and more absurd
Date: Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2020
Review: I love to read and I used to enjoy Mr. Bell's books...but they have gotten so absurd and unrealistic that they just aren't worth the time anymore. For example, early in this book Hawke gets stabbed...no he gets gutted by an assassin with the stupidest name in book-dom. (But I refuse to write that name here.!) Then, left for dead, Hawke has an amazing - no, miraculous recovery and within days is doing every strenuous thing imaginable: swimming, running, diving, etc...despite having his stomach muscles literally shredded and his intestines hanging out. Yeah, right. And this is just one impossible story in the book...his escape from just about everything is quite a joke. Read at your own risk. As for me, I'm done.
