Title: An Important Book in the Development of Cone's Thought

Review: James Cone is undeniably one of the most important theologians of the last century, and this book helps the reader to understand an important development in his thought. Cone burst onto the academic scene with "Black Theology Black Power" (1969) and quickly followed up this work with "A Black Theology of Liberation" (1970). In these two texts Cone founds Black Liberation Theology as an academic discipline, and brilliantly argues that the Black Power movement was the gospel that racist America, and those oppressed by it, needed to hear.

Cone's first two books, however, suffered from the fact that he was almost exclusively drawing upon white theologians in his quest to craft an authentically Black theology. This drew criticisms from various sectors of the theological community - perhaps most pointedly from his brother Cecil Wayne Cone in "The Identity Crisis in Black Theology - and Cone took those criticisms to heart. "The Spirituals and the Blues" is Cone's first attempt to craft theology from Black sources indigenous to America, namely the spirituals and the blues. Cone draws inspiration from the spirituals that sustained enslaved Black Americans and nurtured him in his spiritual upbringing, and argues that the blues - while not explicitly religious - are in fact a theological counterpart to the spirituals. This work then has a profound impact on Cone's mature systematic work "God of the Oppressed" and has borne fruit in more recent Black Liberation and Womanist thought that has drawn theological insight from slave narratives, the hush harbor church, the experiences of Black female domestic workers, etc. This work significantly broadened the academic field of Black Liberation Theology, and has significantly enriched theological discourse in America.

Title: A Must For Every Educator and Musician

Review: James H. Cone stands as a major contributor to Black Liberation and reconciliation of using art as a means of coping and survival through our worst experiences. Professor Cone created this book as a means of filling a void from the destruction of Black leadership of the 1960s, and to offer a historical account and then-modern template (which is very much applicable today) to make meaning as an oppressed people and to rebuild the world.

Review: Easily one of the most beautiful theological works that analyzes the black spirit in and through the spirituals and the blues. These musical outlets are more than ascetic get-aways under oppressive regimes, rather they embody the rhythmic sways and suaves of black hope and grit. Grounded in real history, the spirituals and the blues expose, reject, and recapitulate supremacists' definition of black nothingness/nobodiness into black somebodiness. For blacks, music is their authoritative medium for reshaping their narrative towards a redemptive and majestic eschatological hope: "My Lord! Po' mourner's got a home at las'. Mourner's got a home at las'."

“The Spirituals and the Blues”, by James Cone, is the most accessible of his books so far for two reasons. First, it is less philosophical than the other books I’ve summarized and secondly, I already had some knowledge of these musical genres before I started reading them. Cone spends time reciting songs, explains them in a meaningful way, and gives all of his examples context that credibly suits his presentations.

While the concepts of each genre are not complicated, Cone summarized them so well that any effort for me to paraphrase what he said (in an already short book) feels awkward and sloppy. The most concise way I can think to do this is to say that even though both spirituals and blues come from the same source (a direct response to overwhelming oppression), the answers embedded within each style are different. Spirituals, as the name clearly implies, is religious in nature and is partially “borrowed” from white Christianity then resynthesized to meet the needs of slaves. The most apparent variable that connects it to liberation theology is that although spirituals are fundamentally biblical, they are also culturally contextualized. Both liberation theology and spirituals are the black community’s way of physical and psychological survival in a world where a dominant race has tried to destroy them.

Blues are similar. However, the similarities end where secular answers begin and religion ends as a way to cope with pain and humiliation. That doesn’t mean blues are atheistic or agnostic but it does mean that any belief in God is irrelevant. There is a handful of evidence where some slaves condescended the other slaves for their hope in freedom through religion, which often made a sharp divergence in focus but none of that changed the goal: a physical release from bondage and the prospect that their oppressors would one day get what they deserved, either in this world or the next or both.

The most cutting separation between the genres is that blues singers felt far more receptive to sensuality embedded within the culture. Unlike the negative stereotype of promiscuity that the white community likes to paint and impose on black culture, Cone is very persuasive in pointing out that sexuality can not be rightly separated from spirituality. His point was that when blacks spent centuries having little to no control over their own bodies, their bodies became something sacred. Although slavery did nothing to address the heart of racism, it did free up the physical bondage that blacks had experienced for so long, giving them the opportunity to love and care for who they see fit without retribution from an auctioning block. Therefore, love, sex, and spirituality became indivisible and because of how those conditions were created, whites are incapable and could never possibly understand that aspect of black culture, neither then or today.

Finally, spirituals were much more than religious chants or painful melodies to cope with daily life. They were filled with multiple meanings: spiritual freedom, healing, physical freedom, historical reflections, present reflections, hope for the future, and secret communications just to name a few. They were all of complex, comprehensive, sophisticated, and though we still haven’t openly given the black community credit for this, the were the first to introduce styles of music that have evolved in numerous directions today.

My only complaint with this book is the Kindle edition. There are several typos throughout but I suspect that it isn’t the editor and instead the digital version itself given the nature of the mistakes. If you’re interested in a backstage view of black culture, I definitely recommend this book.

Title: Especially Eye-Opening

Review: If you are not black, this book will be especially eye-opening. We tend to downplay the psychological burdens and emotional suffering of others. This book corrects that for those of us who have not experienced the suffering imposed by racism. Cone's book can also open our eyes to other forms of suffering not related to race, even to understand better those other forms of suffering.

Review: A book I read many moons ago and have at last purchased. A fairly slim volume but packed with what the blues-and spirituals are all about-I am using it as a research tool for my book on Clara Smith and my 4-CD project on 'Protest in the Blues' on JSP Records in 2014.
