Title: Transform boring to brilliant--a must for serious writers

Review: I devour synonyms, find myself staring into space as I consider whether my characters dragged, hauled, or lugged a box. I often jot down a clever description I read that allowed me to clearly visualize what the author meant. Readers of my blog, WordDreams have seen my seventy How-to-describe lists describing the pieces that make a story authentic (like senses, body language, emotions, clothing, pain, and more). When I discovered Kathy Steineman's book, The Writer's Lexicon: Descriptions, Overused Words, and Taboos (K. Steinemann Enterprises 2017), I couldn't resist buying it. It was the 'overused words' that really grabbed me:

"...nuisances that annoy writers around the globe."

Steinemann is talking about the repetitive mundane activities and thoughts that happen over and over in stories and must be noted. How does a writer make stuff like said, shrugged, and sighed exciting--or at least not distracting? For example, with the word Big, Steinemann encourages the writer to think about what they really mean in context, and then provides workarounds:

"Bernard's ego was bigger than his bank account."

or

"Bernard's ego outmatched his mammoth bank account."

For each word, she includes a massive list of replacements, providing writers with a plethora of options to better express their ideas. For big, the list includes:

2XL, ample, chunky, epic, far-ranging, galactic, Herculean, immane, Kodiak-sized, Rhinoesque, Queen-sized, XXL, and ubergross.

There aren't a lot of words, maybe because each is thoroughly covered, but other words she includes are:

beautiful, bring, cried, frown, great, little, nodded [I definitely overuse this one], said, sat, shrug, sigh, and very.

Though I gravitated to these lists, she also includes 1) "Common Pitfalls"--lists of words to watch for in your writing. These include have, get, literally, decide, essentially, and more. She also has Taboos such as Absolute Adjectives, Cursing, Redundancies, and Rolling the Eyes. 2) exercises to help transform boring to brilliant.

I keep this book on my iPad by my computer during the editing/wordsmithing phase of my writing. It forces me to think through what exactly I mean in any given phrase. It is highly recommended for serious writers.

Title: Go-to reference for when you're "stuck" or as you are editing a piece.

Review: "Grannie Stein" is a fountain of knowledge and experience, full of practical and handy advice that she readily shares within the writing community.

She's also a helpful author who is always very generous to those of us who are starting out in our writer-ly careers. I was super-exited to see and purchase this book, knowing that it would be full of helpful tips. And it is. I think it is the perfect reference source for whenever I get 'stuck' on wording something. I can browse through this book and I'm sure that if I can't find exactly what I'm looking for in any of her alternative suggestions, it will act as a thought starter for me. I see this as being a go-to reference when I'm looking for just the right way to phrase a critical passage, or as I'm editing and want to find something fresher or less repetitive.

I purchased it in kindle format, but at some point, but being old school on some things, I'll probably break down and purchase a physical copy too- as I see this being an excellent reference tool.

Review: A very informative book on the subject of how to use words effectively and efficiently in writing. Whether it be a novel, short story, poetry, and so on and so forth. Learned a great deal from this book. Most definitely a good reference book as well as educational. It was not bore or a complete waste of my time.

Review: Kudos to Ms. Steinmann for this painstakingly detailed contribution to the world of writers and editors. It is hard to imagine any writer or editor, no matter how experienced or jaded, who can't benefit from the countless pearls in this book. Try a few global searches of your work, selected from The Writer's Lexicon, and see what I mean. I am betting you'll discover several ways to improve the writing, even if in small bites. A wonderful guide to have sitting on the desk for constant reference.

Title: Fantastic resource for all writers - keep this on your desk

Review: Every aspiring author should read this, then use it on every manuscript to tighten up their writing. Better than a thesaurus, this book provides not just replacements for common problem words, but explanations on various situations and scenarios in which they might appear in your work in progress. One replacement does not fit all. Correctly replacing a problematic word can insert additional depth into a passage. By using Search or Find in your word processor of choice, you can find these problem words and determine whether eliminating or replacing them will make your work better. Kathy also provides tips on better writing in other areas besides common problem words. Novice and experienced writers, both, should be using this every day to tighten up their work.

Review: This is a great source for any author who finds themselves overusing words. Here's just a few samples you'll find inside:

Walter brought his daughter to the picnic. > Walter piggybacked his daughter to the picnic.

Tasha's eyes looked beautiful in the starlight. > The ethereal radiance of the stars couldn't match the allure of Tasha's eyes.

Not only are these edits more interesting to read, they also evoke emotion. The first example shows a fun interaction, while the second strongly implies the narrator is attracted to Tasha.

I look forward to applying these examples to my next round of edits.

Review: I am stoked for the sequel of this to come out! Kathy has done a fantastic job with this one. It is such a useful resource. All writers have clutch phrases and words that they use and sometimes though we can identify it, we are unsure of how to fix it. I highly recommend adding this to your reference arsenal! Also, head to Kathy's website and sign up for her newsletter. She considers what her readers would like to see more of, which is really nice.
