Review: I'm not crying. You're crying.

Actually. I AM crying. Sobbing actually.

I sat down to read this book around 8 tonight and finished it just now in one sitting. I literally lost track of time and didn't move. It's simply beautiful.

It's 1967. And "Rick Evans The Great" is nine. After his older brother is killed in Vietnam, his parents move from California to Utah to be closer to family as they mourn. Facing what looks like the worst Christmas ever, the boy befriends an old chef (who was once a culinary specialist with the Navy) and his dog that lives next door.

Simple plot. But complex remarkable characters.

It's the story my soul didn't know it needed until I reached the last five pages. For anyone experiencing grief or deeply missing a loved one who is not here this year --or maybe the last 16 years even - I highly recommend this book. My Mom died Christmas morning 2017 after she was in a car accident while Christmas shopping
And all I can say is-- reading this book near what is the five year anniversary of her passing can only have been Divine timing.

I bought the book as a little gift to myself. I have always admired Mr. Evans' as a writer.

I was deeply moved and touched by this story. Enriched and taught by it. I feel like I've spent the last two hours with a great friend discussing life, love and loss -- with a plate of fresh cookies and Swiss Miss.

Read it. Please. I need to share all these feelings with someone else!

Review: The most compelling aspect of reading a book by Richard Paul Evans is that you will find something within the pages that will change the way you perceive your life. This book is probably my new favorite novel from Evans, and the hype leading up to its release does not disappoint. I will never forget this book. There are so many lessons and disclosures within the pages of this book that you will think about the novel for years to come. For me, this is the mark of a good novel. I can't get it out of my mind.

I had initially tried to delay reading this book because I wanted to savor every page. But once I started reading, I couldn't stop. Richard Paul Evans has an innate gift as a storyteller. The characters become your friends and your family members. When you're not reading the book, you're thinking about Richard and Mr. Foster and Richard's mother.

Sitting down to read one of the author's books is like sitting with a good friend. You feel comforted, held, and understood. You feel secure in the knowledge that the characters will always be well developed, the story line will always hold surprises and hidden ironies. Rest assured, the characters will stay in your heart forever.

I won't post any spoilers, but this book provided me with an entire range of emotions. Even in its saddest parts, the book has such good lessons and insights that it's worth the feelings of sadness that you will undoubtedly experience. Mr. Foster was a gem of a human being and I felt such a rush of relief that he was a mentor and 'parental' figure for young Richard.

At times, I found myself wondering, "Is this part true?" and "I wonder if this part is autobiographical." At the end of the day, it really doesn't matter which events actually happened to the author, and which did not. What matters is the message of hope, resilience, and love with which the reader will walk alway treasuring.

Well done, Mr. Evans. This book took my heart by storm. Thank you for letting us peek into your heart and your childhood.

Review: While reading your books, I always put myself in as the main character, this book was no different. Your books always touch my heart and this story is one of your best. The way you describe this little boy's (your life's) trials and tribulations was so endearing. Also, the relationship and love between Mr. Foster and his little neighbor boy was so touching. I really enjoyed your book, it gave me a new outlook on death and grief, which has just happen in our family to our son, as his wife took her own life. I will share Mr Foster's thoughts about grief with our son. Maybe it will help him understand his own grief. Thank you again for your compassionate story and the love between two strangers whose lives grow to have a remarkable father-son relationship.

Review: The size of these puppy pads is the best. It gives a pup plenty of room. It’s easier for them to hit their target. Plus in the long run you will save money. They wash up great.

Review: Don’t miss this heartwarming Christmas story where the author recalls a difficult boyhood Christmas!

1967
When Richard’s older brother is killed in Vietnam, the family is torn by grief. Suddenly, Richard’s father loses his job, and his mother takes to staying in her room all day. With no money, the family moves to the abandoned old house where his mother grew up. As Richard deals with loneliness, grief, and bullying, he befriends the neighbor’s dog through a fence. He eventually meets the neighbor, Mr. Foster. Mr. Foster takes Richard under his wing, treating him with kindness, and imparting a love for books. Mr. Foster also teaches Richard a few life lessons. But there is a final lesson for Richard to learn, and sadly, it comes with another great loss.

This beautifully written story hooked me from the beginning, and by the end, I had tears in my eyes. At only 192 pages, it is a quick read, which is perfect for this time of year! You can also listen to this as an audiobook, narrated by the author.
