Review: I was around for the original Rubik's Cube craze in 1981 and learned to solve the cube back then. I watched Minh Thai on "That's Incredible" on his way to being the first world record holder. I took up speedcubing a few years ago after reading "Cracking the Cube". Through all of this I've been fascinated by the enigmatic Erno Rubik. Being from Hungary, he was always a bit of a mystery to those of us in the US. So, when I heard he had written a book, I was eager to pick it up. Unfortunately, I ultimately ended up being terribly disappointed.Mr. Rubik begins his book by telling the reader that he's not a writer and doesn't like writing. He then spends the next 180 pages proving that point over and over.Essentially this book is a disjointed treatise on Rubik's philosophy regarding learning and the nature of objects. There's very little on the man himself. There's some detail on the creation of the Cube (which Rubik bizarrely refers to as if it's a living, breathing creature) but not nearly as much as you'd hope. And then, when he begins describing how he first solved the Cube, he describes a solution that's not physically possible (he describes swapping exactly two pieces without impacting anything else - something that's impossible on a 3x3). There's little detail on the Cube craze with Rubik essentially just saying "it was all a blur". The book also kind of hops around - one paragraph he's talking about the Cube, the next he's repeating his philosophy on some topic yet again.If you're looking for a detailed bio of Rubik, this isn't it. If you're look for a very detailed look at the creation of Rubik's Cube, complete with photos or diagrams of prototypes and designs, you won't find it here. If you're looking for a detailed look at the Cube craze, you won't find it here. If you're looking for information on Rubik's other puzzles, you won't find that here either. If you're looking for a wandering book of philosophy full of bitter statements against teachers (though Rubik himself was a teacher?!?), THAT you will find here.Bottom line: This book was a massive disappointment and an absolute chore to complete.

Review: Erno Rubik is a wonderful writer and storyteller and I was so glad to finally get a glimpse into his life and way of thinking. I absolutely LOVED this book! There was so much to think about and I might honestly have to read it again, someday soon. This is an incredibly wise, thoughtful book by a wise, thoughtful man and an incredible inventor who changed the course of puzzle/toy history. And, of course, in between my time with this book, I worked on solving my Rubik's Cube. I'm still not done (with the Cube). I finished the book a couple of days ago. I will be recommending it to friends and family alike. Thank you to Erno for sharing. He seems like a wonderful man.

Review: I listened to the unabridged audio version of Cubed: The Puzzle of Us All by Erno Rubik and narrated by Alistair Petrie with my husband, which is pretty wonderful as my husband is not an avid reader like myself. However, I was able to easily convince him to do something different to celebrate Christmas Eve last year since we weren't celebrating the holiday with family and friends in the usual way due to pandemic... So, we celebrated Christmas Eve by observing the Icelandic tradition known as Jolabokaflod (Christmas Book Flood) by starting to listen to Cubed: The Puzzle of Us All by Erno Rubik together. We slowly listened to this book together through the end of 2020.My hubby has been a Rubik's Cube fan since he was a youngster, so I figured he'd be interested in listening to this nonfiction book by the creator of the Rubik's Cube and I wasn't wrong. I just didn't count on us both loving this book as much as we both did.Cubed: The Puzzle of Us All by Erno Rubik is well written. It discusses the author's life and how/why he created the Rubik's Cube. Additionally, this book examines so many more other topics; such as puzzles, creativity, curiosity, play, being a professional verses an amateur, and more! Cubed: The Puzzle of Us All gave me great insight into the mind of an inventor and his creative thought process.

Review: Ponderous inventor shares his parents lives and his education. Shares some about how he came up with his famous cube. Due to being in a Socialist 'economy' there is little effort to actually accomplish anything as it is all for the state.He is able to get his invention out from behind the Iron Curtain to a toy fair and eventually the right people see its potential and he goes on a WILD ride, briefly, until it can be knocked off manufacturing-wise by Asia, then, its all over. He has some other ideas but they are generally dismissed.He shares some various ideas about education and how he has been separated from his own name. Occasional insight, he appears to be a still-humble man who hit the jackpot.
