Eighty Days by A.C. Esguerra Book Review

Title: .0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous art and engaging story

Review: Really enjoyed this graphic novel. The cover was what caught my eye first. I love the art of this story. it really fits the setting and there are some truly gorgeous panels. The panel layout is also really good. There was a lot of symbolic and visual story telling. You usually expect that in a graphic novel, but I feel that this novel is even better than usual, playing with shading, size, placement, etc. to put in a lot of detail. There's a lot of use of black and white contrast, some of it is great, but there are a few scenes where it can be difficult to tell what is happening because of how harsh the drawings are.
The story is also really good. It focuses on three characters in an older 20's/30's ish world where aviation and radio operation are tech to be marveled at. There is a rather oppressive company that is slowly gaining more and more power that some people are fighting against. The three characters stories are intertwined with the company and with each other, and we get to see how it unfolds. It becomes a sort of David vs Goliath story.
There are some world building gaps missing in the story. Some stuff where you just have to use your own knowledge of stories with similar plotline/themes.
While it has some flaws, I honestly think this may be one of my favorite new graphic novels.

Review: I LOVED this book. Each page is just so lush and beautiful and I really fell into the story. I finished just a few days after I got it and turned around and read it again. This is going to be on my shelf for a long time. I'm going to buy it for like three people for the holidays.

Review: Warning: A few teeny-tiny spoilers ahead.

GOD, this was worth the wait. I first found A.C. Esguerra on Twitter. (Their sketchbook was reposted by @PrinceCanary, another good artist.) Their art captivated me right away. Okay, true, I have a huge bias toward traditional works. However, their art is unusual. Not only is it COOL, but it also evokes an EMOTION in you. So much entertainment now looks great but feels cold. After I read the first section of Eighty Days, which they had posted online, I decided the writing had substance too. So, I took the plunge and bought a copy.

I loved several things about the writing of Eighty Days, and they can mostly be summed up in one sentence. It LOOKS and READS like a Golden Age Hollywood movie...just without the BS. There's no Hay's Code dictating what's "ethical." It's obvious Jay and Fix love each other--no indecipherable innuendos. I hope this isn't a spoiler BUT...neither die. They're treated just as fairly as a straight couple. And Sable? Yes, her design is flipping fantastic. But I loved how she was ACTUALLY a strong woman. Not just physically--yeah, she can hold her own in a fight--but verbally too. She ACTUALLY sticks up to "men behaving badly," as my mother would put it. She calls them out with her words. (Finally!) Oh, and the good guys aren't all white. But some of them are, of course. Best of all, none of this diversity feels like it's slapped on.

It also retains what worked about old Hollywood films. Esguerra composes their panels well, minus a couple of fight scenes that were hard to follow. I feel like the "artsy" tricks they employed weren't gimmicky because they added to the emotion of the tale. Nazis and gangsters aren't treated as "cool," even though some recent films pretend they are. (I can't believe the previews I've seen.)

Okay, I realize I'm selling this thing hard, LOL. But I did have one gripe, which was the pacing. I wish it would have prolonged some moments between action scenes, especially in the third and fourth sections. An extra page here and there of Jay and Fix would have been nice. Not necessarily fluff, just exploring their romance in greater detail. That being said, I feel like the second section was paced near perfectly...because it did have quieter moments between the action.

Overall, Eighty Days may take inspiration from the past, but given all that's happening in the world, it felt disturbingly timely. Noooooo, its hard-won happy ending did not solve all of life's problems. But it gave me a little more hope and motivation to face them. Given the garbage two years I've had, that's saying something. I hope Esguerra keeps writing and drawing. As sappy as it sounds, I'm proud to own this thing.

TL;DR--If you want a comic that looks as good as its story reads, pick up Eighty Days. Nope, I wasn't paid to say that.

Review: 4.5 Stars!

I love graphic novels so I was super excited when I got this. Turns out my excitement was warranted and I couldn't be happier with how it went.

The story telling style took some getting used to (hence the 4.5 stars) but once I got into the story, I simply could not put it down.

More often than not, books such as these focus too much on the art with the story being told feeling like some kind of afterthought. That was NOT the with this book as the art was great, and on par with the storyline.

Here, we got an intricate plot which kept me riveted till the very end. I enjoyed every second of it and will recommend it for fellow lovers of graphic novels.

Review: A story of valor and love, 80 Days follows a pilot, a resistance fighter, and a woman rising through the ranks to leadership as their world is at war, and they have to choose which side(s) they will fight on. At times the story and the action scenes were unclear, but the black and white illustrations were dynamic, striking, and the relationships between the characters complex and moving. A.C. will be an author/artist to watch.

Title: .0 out of 5 stars Had potential but didn't deliver and too long

Review: A queer romance set in the backdrop of psuedo World War II. Starts off about a pilot and a radio operator traveling through some made up countries while a fascist government (AVO) quickly starts taking over nearby countries. As soon as they figure out their love for one another, the book shifts to a new chapter that is completely war focused and the romance is dropped until the end while they are torn apart.

The book's plot is mainly about radio signals. One of the main characters is a radio genius. It completely lost me as it just descends into gibberish as a plot device. At first I was with it and then it just kept on going to the point of nonsense. The book also spends a lot of time traveling between these made up countries. That was all meaningless to me though because the countries were never nothing more than just a made up name such as "Easterly". A map of the world would have helped greatly to make these movements more interesting.

The art confounded me. Some pages looked gorgeous. Other pages were a swirl of smoke and speed lines to the point I couldn't make out anything on the page. I couldn't make out most of the action sequences. I think the author made everyone chain smoke just so they could add swirling smoke to every panel.
