Title: No index, overly verbose, and missing topics

Review: I'm not sure sure how this book was intended to be used. It doesn't have an index, which makes it ineffective as a reference, and inconvenient to the reader who already has some knowledge of Kafka and is looking to shore up on certain areas.

It's also unnecessarily verbose -- the author tries too hard to use big words that he doesn't fully understand, and too often uses them incorrectly. (For example, saying concepts are "endemic" to certain solutions, when he means "intrinsic.") This makes it an unnecessarily difficult read, occasionally requiring the reader to look up words, and more often reminding the reader why books need editors. (Effective Kafka is, unsurprisingly, self-published.)

Last, the book appears to be missing topics (although this is difficult to confirm without an index). For example, Apache Avro is the most common schema used with Kafka, and the author quickly brushes Avro aside and focuses exclusively on JSON. He also doesn't appear to even mention the Schema Registry, a topic to which most other books on Kafka will dedicate an entire chapter.

If a developer doesn't know anything about Kafka, I suppose this book may be an acceptable introduction. However, given that the book seems to be incomplete and is ill-suited to being a reference, such a developer would still need to purchase another book -- at which point, I'm not sure what value this book really adds.

Title: A great book for learning Kafka for both Enterprise and Personal applications

Review: This book is a great in-depth explanation of what Kafka is, why you should use it, and how to use it well. Emil did a great job providing good examples and offered good diagrams and images to go along with them. Those diagrams and pictures help you navigate coding standards and make it easier to understand concepts because you can visualize them.

If your company uses Kafka or is thinking about using Kafka, this book is perfect. The beginning of the book does a great job explaining how Kafka fits into your “tech stack”. The later chapters dive deep into how to utilize Kafka to save money and time properly. Overall, this book does a great job of making sure you know every aspect of Kafka.

If you have a personal interest in Kafka, this book is an excellent reference for everything you can do with Kafka. The beginning chapters will help you understand the principles behind the technology, so I recommend you go through those. But the later chapters are great if you want to pick and choose what to learn.

Review: I really enjoyed this book. The author makes it very interesting to understand Kafka, especially in the beginning chapters and increases the complexity as the book continues. It has great diagrams and I can only say from my point of view as someone relatively new to Kafka and even driven architecture but I would really reccomend to this new and not so new to event driven architecture and Kafka.

Title: The Definitive Guide

Review: Kafka has become very popular in the last few years, and if you wish Kafka, there is no shortage of material on the internet. But most of that material is light on substance. Try searching for "how Kafka consumer group membership works" and you'll rarely encounter an online article that explains this concept as elegantly as the author did in Chapter 15 of this book. Or read Chap 18, and you'll come away appreciating the painstaking detail that went into implementing the Idempotence and Transactions feature. I read every chapter (some chapters multiple times) because you are not only learning about the inner workings of Kafka, but also learning from the experience of the author who has a lot of real world Kafka experience. The author is hands down a very through software professional and it comes across in his thinking and writing. The only thing missing in this book is monitoring, because that's another area that's become very crucial to running Kafka effectively.
