Title: A Long Time Coming But It's Not Quite There Yet

Review: Valencia was posting about this on the BJM forums for years, and before going any further, I think it's important to respect the time and effort that went into this. This book is obviously an expression of love for the band, and will only really appeal to people who are already interested in the Brian Jonestown Massacre.

I wasn't completely sold on Elizabeth Goodman's Meet Me in the Bathroom, but I think its oral history format would work really well for BJM. Get a bunch of interviews from former band members and friends (the stuff about the Fat Girl Suicide was gold, by the way!) and cut them into chronological order so you can flip between different voices as they discuss similar time periods or records.

This book would benefit immensely from a name glossary at the front or back: full names, tenure if possible, and other bands they've been in (there used to be something like this on the BJM archive). The BJM member commentary on the DVD of Dig!, which is where Valencia gets a ton of the info he presents in the book, features a kind of "where are they now" section during the credits that would also work in this book.

The early years chapters are pretty well put together and interesting, but the chapters that take place during the "heyday" are pretty much just transcriptions of Joel, Matt, and Dean's commentary from Dig. The later information gets super disjointed and rushed, but the Jeff Davies interview quotations are worthwhile.

It's easy to be a backseat driver, and I teach college English (I'm a square), so some of my criticism will come across as nit picky or overtly academic, but this book needed an editor and, secondarily but still importantly, an indexer. Hire poor grad students to do this for you if you don't want to or can't do it yourself. Typographical errors are all over the place, as are sentences that were spliced together from original distinct statements, paragraphs that were moved around (a person will be referred to by their first name and then later will be introduced with their full name), the footnotes are nonsense attempts to spruce up the style rather than provide reference, the back matter and sources are thrown in with little to no systematization. Valencia will say "I have heard it said" before referencing something Matt or Dean says in the Dig commentary... and so on. It's very, very sloppy.

If you want to write a book about your quest to interview and research members of the Brian Jonestown Massacre (which is probably impossible because no one stays in the band for more than five seconds and Anton Newcombe is probably a not very reliable narrator), that MIGHT be interesting for fellow fans. If you want to write a history of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, then make your sources transparent, let them speak for themselves, and stick to your role as compiler and editor of the information, not as a filter for it. The jumps in time and inconsistencies most likely reflect Valencia's attempts to smooth this into a narrative, but this comes at the expense of whatever coherence could've been maintained by organizing and presenting this information not seamlessly, but for what it really is: a hodgepodge of differing and often contradicting memories, rumors, and statements that have emerged from the huge network that is the Brian Jonestown Massacre.

I'm still waiting for the gripping courtroom drama that has led to Matt Hollywood's songs getting taken off Spotify, but you can't have everything.

Title: Your Side Of Our Story

Review: I will preface this review by saying this book is clearly a labor of love by the author and he no doubt spent much time writing it. I respect and appreciate him for it. As a fan of the band for 23+ years and having seen them probably nearly 40 times live over the years (pre-Dig and post-Dig)...this is a band I have a connection with and who I hold dear to my heart. I know the story, I witnessed the shambolic band in their younger days all the way up to the polished and mature band who last toured in 2018. However, anybody who witnessed them when the stars aligned perfectly will tell you they had the potential to be truly magical and breathtaking. The music is both honest and beautiful and in my opinion there is no other American band from the 90s that can come close to the magic that was the Brian Jonestown Massacre and is Anton Newcombe.

THAT SAID...this book has its flaws. Ventura attempts to tell the story via many conversations both in person as well as online. Much seems to get lost in translation and it is evident when reading that it was compiled from hundreds/thousands of mini conversations. The flow isn't there to keep it moving other than "what came next". There are also so many people along the way that are name dropped that one honestly loses track as to who is who (and no, they are not all ex-band mates, many are ex-roommates, friends, lovers, music biz folks, fans etc.). Ventura does get some snippets here and there from the band, but nothing directly from Anton. Therefore the story loses much when one has no direct communication from the main guy himself. Especially considering he is still alive and creating. The other criticism I place on this book is there is far too much time spent attempting to "de-myth" the documentary 'Dig'. While he acknowledges and credits the filmmakers story he gives far too much coverage spent talking about "this scene" or "that scene" in the film. Obviously one cannot omit the film from their story as for better or worse it is a significant detail in their legacy, but setting out to debunk scenes or how it was edited etc. becomes too much of the focus for much of the book. And, lastly....the final chapter, or so, is also unnecessary promotion of the author's own music and band, which I don't believe has a place in a book about other people's art. After all, this is THEIR story....not a place for the author's self promotion.

All of that said, this may read as a negative review, but it isn't. This is simply the only book we currently have on this amazing band and artist and it is just one side of their story. There will no doubt be more to come in the future, but until then...if you absolutely adore this band as much as I do, well, you gotta read it. Just don't have wild expectations of learning anything new or expecting the book to be something that it isn't.

Review: Really enjoyed this book because it's full of anecdotes, obscure facts, and rare photos. Lots of people who were there provided info and memories. It's almost an oral history.

I'm a big fan of Brian Jonestown Massacre and this is the first book on them, so kudos for that. Lots of insight into the creative and recording process, the social scene, the band drama, the ever-shifting personnel, the excesses, the challenges of carrying on in the face of big odds.

I took off a star because it's riddled with typos and mistakes, which is not excusable for a book you plan to publish professionally. Especially since there is a thing called spell-check?

While the typos are annoying, the high interest and plethora of BJM stuff made it an enjoyable read anyway.
