I read nothing in this book I haven't read in other books on situational awareness.

I'd recommend reading The Gift of Fear if you want to learn about situational awareness...this is just 200 pages of fluff.

I actually put this book in the trash, rather than donate it to a local book store or thrift store, because I don't want anyone else to waste time reading it.

Title: Great read for those who face danger as part of their job or simply as part of their life.

Review: While focused on combat, the subject matter is applicable to a vast array of situations from law enforcement to flying to individual safety. The authors do a great job of describing the theory, practice and results.

It is not just about being a good guy trying to fulfill a dangerous mission but also has immense applicability ( with some adjustments) for guiding young people, especially women, in avoidance or recognition of and extraction from dangerous situations.

Recognizing and reacting to threats is not just the challenge faced by young Marines far from home but equally relevant (sadly) to the young woman entering an adult world, often far from home and friends. The same awareness that saves young Marines can save young women from harm. The same resolution to recognize and decisively react to anomalies without the waiting to fully understand what's happening is equally valuable, especially to our young people.

Review: "Left of Bang" by Patrick Van Horne and Jason A. Riley is a must read for anyone who wants to stay safe.

Written by two Marine Corps officers, this book is based on the Marine Corps' Hunter Safety Program. That course is designed to "instill a hunter-like mindset in Marines." The training focuses on increasing situational awareness, recognizing threats early, and developing a system for acting on those threats. That training program was developed at the direction of Defense Secretary (then Marine Corps General James Mattis) to help Marines be predators, rather than prey.

Some of the information deals with combat profiling threats based upon several criteria including kinesics, biometric cues, proxemics, geographics, iconography, and atmospherics. It contains a great system for decision making under high stress conditions. It is highly applicable to military forces, police officers, probation/parole officers, and citizens who are concerned about the safety of themselves and their family members.

I heard about it at a seminar given by well-known tactical instructors Lt.Col. Dave Grossman and Lt. Jim Glennon, who recommend it. It is really a superb book that those in the law enforcement and military communities should read and study. Great stuff.
