Title: Just an OK Read for Me

Review: Murder in G Major was an ok read for me. It was a book that I thought I would enjoy more than I did due to previous reviews. I had trouble staying interested in the book for about three fourths of it but the ending picked up and was good.

Gethsemane Brown, an American, has obtained a teaching job in Ireland in a small village teaching music. She is living in a cottage of a local world famous composer who was charged twenty five years ago of killing his wife and then committing suicide.

Upon arrival in the cottage, she finds she is sharing the cottage with the ghost of the composer who wants her to find out who really killed his wife and him. He denies the charges that went against him.

Gethsemane is witty, independent and has a strong will to succeed. She maybe has a little of the TSTL syndrome in her as bodies start falling all around her and she is warned that she could be next by acquaintances. There are many suspects.

I felt an opportunity could have been used to work more with the boys in her orchestra to show their personalities. Her school wants her to win the top prize in a musical contest. She has a less than mediocre group of boys to work with. They were a side story worked in. She wants to win so she could be offered a job in Philadelphia. Her chances are not deemed high.

The story was left with a cliff hanger. I see that the series was continued. I am not planning on continuing with the series. It seemed it had a lot of elements that I would like. It won the Lefty Award and was up for an Agatha award. It just fell flat for me.

Review: That was delightful!
I feel as if this book were written just for me. it ticks off a lot of the things that make a book just work for me.

- African American female lead who is smart and excellently competent in her job
- great dialogue
- Funny
- good story
- good writing
- great supporting characters who are not cardboard but have personality

And in this case a nice hook in a good cosy mystery. Also one of my favorite tropes is the outsider who comes in and shakes things up and this book is definitely that.

Gethsemane Browne is a virtuoso violinist whose life has imploded around her. She was promised a job as the assistant conductor of the Cork Philharmonic orchestra only for it to be snatched from under her by the music director's mistress. Since she had given up everything in the states to take the position -- her job, her apartment, her boyfriend -- she was literally left with almost nothing.

Because she comes from a family of overachievers -- doctors, chemists, nuclear physicists, judges -- she can't slink back home an utter failure. It is not to be borne. So she takes a job as a music teacher in a teaching academy in a small Irish village. It happens to be the home of one of the world's most renowned composers and concert pianists, Eamon McCarthy. A man who had supposedly murdered his wife and then killed himself.

Only this isn't true as Gethsemane quickly learns. She is housed in Eamon's cottage as part of her teaching contract. What they didn't tell her is that the cottage comes with Eamon's restless ghost. Well, they didn't tell her because they didn't know. It seems only Gethsemane has the luck to be able to communicate with his ghost.

What follows is a fun mystery as Eamon inveigles Gethsemane to clear his name and restore his reputation. The two have a very Ghost as Ms. Muir vibe, but with a decidedly modern twist as the snark factor between them is high and the quips fly fast and furious. But there is affection underneath as their friendship flourishes as Gethsemane gets closer to the truth.

Gethsemane is a great character to hang the story on. She has a bit of an irreverent sense of humor, she knows her whisky and Negro League baseball, she is talented and extremely focused. Even though she enters into her amateur sleuthing reluctantly, once she gets her teeth into she refuses to back down even as other murders happen that are clearly connected and she is most likely a target herself.

I also rather enjoyed all the relationships and connections she makes with the very colorful local characters. Her prickly relationship with the cold case Inspector O'Reilly or her co-conspiratorial relationship with the nicely sarcastic math teacher Francis.

And finally, I like that the writing doesn't try to Americanize everything. The names and places and terms are specifically Irish. For instance she could have just said the 'Dunmallach police' but a local uses the term 'Dunmullach An Garda Síoichána.' Sure they don't trip off the American tongue easily but I appreciated that the author seems to have enough respect for her audience to keep it real...

The mystery gets solved in the end, but the story isn't entirely over. Our heroine has a bit of a professional dilemma she needs to work through and our resident ghost finds himself in a bit of a pickle.

Title: Eamon was an awesome ghost, and his banter with Gethsemane was priceless at times

Review: Super well-written and plotted! I really enjoyed the ghost character of Eamon McCarthy, what a snarky fun guy! Gethsemane was a great character herself. I couldn't quite relate with her because she'd just so intelligent and into classical music, but I did love how she stood up for herself and didn't take lip from anyone even a ghost lol. She had a great sense of humor. There were so many different characters that I don't think I could have solved this, so I just sat back and enjoyed the read and let Gethsemane and Francis take the reins. Francis, a fellow teacher at the boys' school, was a good sleuthing buddy for her.

The showdown was really exciting and even though the boys seemed disrespectful of her at first, they definitely came through for their teacher at the end. This book has to hold the record of what I've read so far for body count, lol. No worries, no boys or ghosts were hurt in the telling. The main mystery which was first a cold case was solved, but at the end of this, there is a slight cliffhanger which leads into the next book.

Review: I dont know how this book came up in my list, but I am so happy it did. The whodunnit is pretty apparent, at least to me it was, but the way the author writes, the relationship between the characters, the description of Ireland, the wit, the sarcasm is frankly, amazing.

If the author is half as interesting as her words make her seem, I want to hang out with her.

I was getting so tired of the bland murder mysteries I was reading, to the point I would scroll to the end just to see if I had guessed right about the murderer and motive. With this book, I savored it and was sad when I came to the end and realized there was no book two. Boohoo.
