Title: A very introspective Darcy

Review: This book is made interesting by endowing Darcy, who is usually supremely confident and in charge, with deep vulnerability and uncertainty, resulting in depression early in the story. He arrives in Hertfordshire in the usual way, attends the assembly, but does not make the insulting statement about Elizabeth. There is the usual incident with Jane being invited to Netherfield by Caroline Bingley, falling ill, and Elizabeth coming to nurse her, during which time Darcy starts to reluctantly fall in love. Shortly thereafter, on the day that Darcy and Bingley ride into Meryton and see Wickham speaking with the Bennett ladies, Darcy's depression make him snap, and he publicly confronts and humiliates Wickham, and warns the townspeople against him. This is, of course, completely out of character for Darcy, and he is deeply embarrassed by his actions, even while he is being hailed as a hero by the people of Meryton. Darcy decides to leave town, and try to figure out why he's so depressed and angry.

It's refreshing to have a variation wherein Darcy deals so directly with Wickham instead of the usual tight lipped approach, even though that isn't the last that we hear from Wickham. It's also refreshing and heartwarming to have this kind of a struggling Darcy, one who knows there's something important that he's missing, some reason that his life isn't going as well as it should, in spite of all his material wealth and privilege. Fortunately, Darcy has a close friend, who unfortunately is dying, but who gives him some words of wisdom on his deathbed that seem to inspire Darcy to better things. The profound insight he eventually reaches is that he's always tried to be like his father, but that his father wasn't that great of a role model. He determines that he will be a better man.

Meanwhile, Darcy bungles a proposal to Elizabeth, has his second chance, and finally wins her. But the author has decided that there will be one serious obstacle after another thrown into their path to happiness. However, in his swoon worthy way, Darcy can overcome all troubles as long as he knows that he's got Elizabeth by his side. The romance is wonderful, both Elizabeth and Darcy are wonderful, and because of Darcy's initial vulnerability, we're cheering for them all the way.

My only reservation was about the abrupt ending. ODC get their HEA, but it seems to wrap up too quickly, without any epilogue, just a brief summary at the end. After the wonderful storytelling and plot development throughout the book, it seemed unfinished. I think it needed another chapter.

Nonetheless, the book is well written and well edited. I recommend it highly.

Title: Good Story That Tanks in the Last Two Chapters

Review: For 25 chapters, this was a good story with good pacing and a good plot and character development. Then, in chapter 26, the author switches to lengthy letters between ODC. The cause is a false lawsuit against Darcy that postpones the wedding between the two. Elizabeth must leave for the north so as not to distract Darcy from his defense. Hence, the solution to the case is covered in letters. They run on and on and primarily cover how passionately the miss each other and tha affection ardently expresses. We have become well acquainted with that in the previous chapters as they battle for self control and leave each other beathless. A few passing comments cover the issue of the lawsuit which is resolved. In chapter 27, they reunite and the major story there is that Elizabeth chooses to be civil to Caroline Bingley for some slanderous remarks against Darcy rather than let Darcy cut her. The last 3 or 4 paragraphs mention that there was a wedding, they occasionally argued, and they had two cildren, a boy and a girl. It is almost like another author wrote the last two chapters without much reference to the previous 25. It was disappointing ending and soured me on the book.

Title: Darcy knows he's the perfect gentleman...so why is he so unhappy?

Review: This story offers a very different meeting between Elizabeth and Darcy; thus the assembly insult never happens. Darcy hides his dissatisfaction with his life. He doesn't know what's wrong; he just doesn't feel.....well, happy. Life seems like drudgery and endless responsibilities, rather than the sunshine and cheer of his friend Bingley.

When George Wickham appears in Meryton exuding his practiced charm, Darcy loses his self-control. Enraged, he attacks Wickham in public, denouncing him as a cheat and scoundrel.

Darcy finds himself fascinated by the spirited and lively Miss Elizabeth. When they meet again in London he can't help but propose to her, no matter how unsuited she is to be his wife. Readers will not be surprised to learn our heroine is less than impressed with the back-handed compliment of Darcy's first proposal.

Her refusal shatters Darcy's assumption of natural superiority. For the first time he begins to question his rigid adherence to duty and his father's admonitions. A flood disaster at Pemberley shows him that his tenants are surprised when he pitches in to personally help them. He's shocked by their surprise – has he not always been a good master?

A dying friend asks a favor of him, and in return gives Darcy some excellent advice. He begins to make changes in how he relates to people, and finds it rewarding. His life becomes fuller and more meaningful, even as he remains regretful about losing Elizabeth.

When they meet again in Meryton on the occasion of Jane and Bingley's wedding, Elizabeth is starting to soften towards him. But a scandal involving Lydia threatens to ruin all the Bennets. It takes a swift intervention by Darcy to offer a solution that will allow the family to remain respectable.

Although the ending of the book could have been better detailed, it's a satisfying conclusion to a fine P&P variant. The focus on Darcy and how he finally achieves happiness is an imaginative and well-crafted story. Highly recommended for Austen fans!
