Review: This book takes you into reality. The characters may be fictional by name, but the incidents are as good as real. It is a dark book - living in the Cape Flats is no joke, and the gangsters ruling the place is everything but fictional. Robbery and attacks in the richer areas are also becoming a common phenomenon.

But then so are the powers doing their utmost in tackling crime.

And the contrast as shown by the author between the super rich and super poor, on both sides of the spectrum (criminals and others) is being portrayed as real as it is in South Africa.

The ligthter moments are also not to be missed - the oversized Auntie with the irratating little stoepkakker (little dog), ruling it with the smooched lips, is described with exceptional accuracy. You can almost see the pavement special nestling in the auntie's bossom.

The plot is also realistic - but with the tragic elements not to be escaped.

A good, exciting read. A book that will touch most South African's hearts.

Review: "Wake Up Dead" is another dead on winner. Just make sure you can handle violent people and bad situations because you will only find violent people and bad situations in "Wake Up Dead"".

Roger Smith's writing is powerful and the stories move fast. Don't start liking someone because ten pages later you will find out they are not who you think they are. The books are violent, but the violence is always important to and part of the story. The plots are unique and his dialogue is excellent. Because of this his books are wonderful to read.

The most important factor in determining an author's talent is his/her ability to involve you in the story. Roger Smith makes you feel like you actually know the people and you find yourself hoping things will get better for them. I don't think it would give the story away to say things never do seem to get much better. Even though life doesn't improve much for the characters, the story moves forward - at an incredible non-stop rate.

I think you should give any of his books a try. You won't regret it. My question is why are five-stars the maximum rating? You don't see this kind of ability very often and if you aren't a writer it is hard to express how really good these books are. If five-stars is the top rating "Wake Up Dead" at least a ten.

Roger Smith is the best new talent to show up in years.

Review: I can't believe I liked this book because the lives of most of the characters were so sad, depressing. However, I was sucked in by the twists and turns which kept me reading. I liked the main two characters and had to know what happened to them. Good read. I do wonder if this is life for many as the book portrayed.

Review: This was a very gratifying read. The author's writing is not wordy but concise, as most authors don't seem to be able to do. Mr. Smith gets right to the point of his story, moving his plot very smoothly. I wish more writers were like that. I couldn't put it down, except I had to kinda glance over most of the brutalty because, for me, it was too graphic. However, the storyline was tight, interesting, and heart stopping. The story had me grasping my throat of what was going to happen next. This book was super-to-the-max pure excitement! The main characters, especially Roxy who began this whole fiasco, and Disco, Billy, and Piper were unforgettable; and for me, it had a satisfying ending.

I also recommend the first book I read by Roger Smith "Mixed Blood." I give it four stars.. It's a very good read too. I can't wait for his next book to come out. Hurry up Mr. Smith. There aren't many out there like you!

Other authors I recommend, if I may, are Robert Crais and Mike Lawson. I have every book they've written.
