Title: Crawl, Walk, Run! This is a well-designed book!

Review: If you've bought countless books trying to find the nuts & bolts of music theory this book might be for you. If you're a non-Music School-trained Player who wants to understand what the pros probably learned long ago, this book might be for you. If you're tired of guessing and want to know more about music theory concepts that have eluded you for years, this book might be for you. If you've ever run into another Musician that's more Performer than Teacher or one that shared a tidbit of information and left you wanting to learn more but didn't, this book might be for you. As I look at my stack of previously purchased music books, I think about the reasons why I bought them; I played at an Open Mic and nailed the changes on one tune only to fall short on the next. I sat in with some professional Players I know and hoped they'd pick a tune for me to play in a key I felt comfortable playing in and I soon reached "No Man's Land" hoping someone would throw me a life preserver before I drowned in the sea of chord changes.

I first got introduced to Bert Ligon's work when I made yet another purchase of one of his other books called Connecting Chords With Linear Harmony. Although a great book, I got ahead of myself with that one. I still have it and plan to return to it. In other words, I tried to run before I learned to Crawl or Walk. Therefore, I stumble.

Bert Ligon has a very friendly writing style that builds concept upon concept. This is a very think book with lots of content in it. The Author goes to great extent to unlock the mysteries of Music Theory and provides plenty of examples so you wrap your brain around the concepts easier.

For me, I've recognized that some books provide excellent exercises, drills, licks, and patterns. My growing library of music books provides a ready-reference of practice time choices. For example, if I want to practice Blues, I have several books I can refer to and create my own practice routine or discovery based solely on the buffet of books on my bookcase. However, if I want to truly understand the concepts involved with music theory, I need some resource that guides me through, step-by-step, and helps me catch up to creep closer and closer to a better understanding of the musical prowess I hear in so many Gigging Musicians. You see, where many of these extremely talented, fluent, and outstanding Musicians made a lifetime career in Music, this is not the career choice I chose. I love to play and when you ask me "If you could be anything you wanted to...", Professional Sax Player is at the top of my list! And, you know how you would answer that question. And I believe this book will help you make baby steps, slow progress, and gradually take you from crawling, to walking, to that one day when you're running - chords, changes, solos, Cherokee at 300 bpm, Indiana, you get the idea.

If you consider this Musical journey a marathon and not a sprint, if you need a solid and well-conceived instruction manual for music theory (specifically Jazz Theory), if you need a resource to connect the dots and make sense or fill the gaps in the stacks of books you already own, this might be the book for you.

We all learn in different ways and methods. I find (I cannot say found because I will be learning from this book for a very long time.) Jazz Theory Resources: Volume 1 to be an important book that supports my slow progress.

Review: I'd give this six stars if I could.

I wasn't sure if I should get volume 1, because I have a good background in music theory, have read many books, such as Levine's well known book on Jazz Theory (a very good book), but thought it would be worth it if I could get some good ideas out of it. I could not believe how many ideas I've gotten from this book! The author, even in presenting material I already know, is able to do so in a way that makes me think of something I hadn't thought of before.

The amount of material he covers is astounding. It's like 10 books in one. He presents in one chapter what other books take a whole book to present, and does a better job doing it. Really amazing.

Just to mention a couple of things I found really interesting:
1)The author makes an argument that ear training should focus on a note's relation to the tonic, not on intervals. I found his argument convincing.
2)Diminished chords are often misunderstood and spelled incorrectly. His discussion of this topic was extremely helpful to me.
3)Talks about RNA (Roman Numeral Analysis), and how this can be a tool to understand what's happening in a tune. Discusses how RNA is often done incorrectly.
4)Gives many example harmonic progressions, well over 30, with RNA.

Title: Good Jazz Theory Book

Review: Excellent Jazz theory book that is closer to tonal music theory than the Jazz Theory Book by Mark Levine. However, Levine's book is less dry, more accessible and conversational.

If you don't have a background in tonal (i.e. Classical) music theory, then Bert's introduction of classical inversion numbers (i.e. 6th) will confuse because there's no explanation. Also, sometimes there's too much mention of actual notes (i.e. Eb going to Db, etc.) for my taste. Considering it's a theory book, I would prefer intervals so that I can imagine the concept in whatever key I want.

Still, this book is a great compliment to any other theory book out there.

Title: An Outstanding Book on Jazz Theory

Review: My only concern is that there are very few exercises for the student to write, thereby reinforcing the concepts being taught. I read the entire book, and dog-eared the corners of the pages that have exercises or other such areas that I want to focus on more in-depth. However, a few pages at the end of each subject, containing exercises in identification, writing, analysis, etc, would make this a truly outstanding book. However, that is provided to the reader/student who is willing to make it on their own. So I guess the author cannot be blamed for one's lack of motivation and self-sufficiency!

I am eager to get into the other books in this series (
