Review: I am planning a kayak trip down the length of the Suwannee river and this was the first book I purchased in preparation. As a practical "guide" book, I found it severely lacking. There are only approximately 33 pages of practical information, usually the first few pages of each "chapter." The remainder of the book is more of a trip narrative, history and nature guide. The maps are extremely vague and the author even admits that the mileages on the maps are "near approximations" and that no GPS device was used in their approximations. If you want to read a history of the Suwannee, or read about the experiences of the two authors while floating the river, including detailed descriptions of the sights along the way, this book is for you. If you are an experienced paddler and want information that will assist in the detailed planning of your trip, this book will most likely be a waste of your time.

Review: Some very interesting historical information which enhanced our visit to Suwannee River State Park. Anecdotal writing style was sometimes fun, sometimes seemed more like journal writing and not that helpful in understanding the history of the places, nor helpful in planning our trip. Would not recommend this as the only book you consult for planning a trip.

Review: To Rose Knox and Graham Schorb the Suwannee is a sacred place to be revered; and, they crafted "Canoeing and Camping on the Historic Suwannee River" to share their respect and love of place with other paddlers. Based upon years of experience on the river and exhaustive research, Knox and Schorb transport the paddler back to the time of Indians and early settlers when times were simpler and harder. Paddlers learn about steamship travel, taste wars, tourism and special camp cooking. The Guide is organized into nine river sections, each prefaced by navigational and camping information, topography, wildlife spotted, points of interest and where to restock. This is followed by photographs of flora, fauna and special places highlighted by stories that give the Suwannee its Florida authenticity. There are plenty of helpful hints, fun tidbits and how to info to aid the adventure paddler. Put away your GPS, you won't need it, and it might interfere with being absorbed into the unique Suwannee River culture. Sure, you could paddle the Suwannee without this Guide, there are lots of other maps available, but you'll miss the fun, adventure and spirituality of the Suwannee river.The Guide is an absolute must read for everyone paddling into history along the Suwannee River.

Review: Canoeing and Camping on the Historic Suwannee River exceeded my expectations. This substantial, well-written book is far more than the usual canoe guide. Instead, it's a blend of well-researched human history, personal narrative, natural history, and useful, very specific information for river travelers. As a full-time professional nature writer and experienced wilderness paddler, I admire the obvious work and heartfelt connection of the authors, Rose Knox and Graham Schorb. Even if you've never lifted a paddle, and never see the the Suwannee River--truly one of the great rivers of the Eastern U.S.--you'll be engrossed by this narrative, which will appeal to history buffs and armchair adventurers. And for anyone who plans to run the Suwannee, it's a must read.
