Review: A chaotic and tender journey of vulnerability, this book is beautifully real, honest, and self-depreciating at times. Reading this is akin to seeing Flea on stage - frenetic energy, alive with originality and the pulse of his creativity. He is unabashedly and introspectively himself in this memoir. There were moments I had to step back from reading, to stop, absorb, and sit with some of his philosophical insights, and other times I was reeling from the crazy antics he takes the reader along on. This is a tale of survival and creativity and needing and wanting and yearning and living and taking and giving. I wish I could hug that lost little boy who so needed it way back when. A great book for fans of RHCP of course, but also for lovers of all music, rock and roll, the arts scene, punk rock, and especially for outsiders and those who love them, as well as anyone driven by a creative spirit.

Review: This book surprised me. I’ve always liked Flea and this book inspired a huge respect for him. I’ve read AK’s autobiography which I also loved but this is more of a vulnerable book rather than a historical account. It’s a book of love, of centering, a book of grace and a deep introspection.

Review: Written from Flea's perspective and only about his life before the Chili Peppers. I liked getting to know Flea a little bit better and his journey but I feel like the esoteric way he wrote this book could leave some readers confused. I also compared this book in my mind while reading it to Scar Tissue, Anthony Keidis' autobiography. This is a mistake and I urge you not to do this while reading Acid For the Children. Flea admits that Anthony is better with words than he is and therefore, in my opinion Scar Tissue is still the better book. But this was an easy and quick read and I really like the type of person Flea is. He's very humble and philosophical. A true genuine person. I look forward to the next book he writes because it will be about his journey with the RHCP.

Title: A mixed bag of youthful vignettes

Review: Flea writes about his childhood prior to RHCP's formation. Some of these vignettes are moving, like his formative first encounters with live jazz music. Other stories, like his job as a yearbook photographer, are banal and forgettable. I wound up skimming through much of it.

Review: Initially gave it a four,, Flea was lucky to survive his drug usage, and got tiresome to read right at the end (ok, I get. I'm lucky (blessed) too!
I grew up in the same era in LA (SF Valley, then SG Valley), and felt "disconnected" for different reasons;
"I'm not white" then "I moved from a white neighborhood to a segregated one" etc.

The constant seeking for rescue from the shame in my head, and the constant evolving love of music I all related to. In the end it really is a five, it kept me engaged. And lived that his insanity made me laugh out loud while sitting in a quiet plane waiting for take off.

Review: I have found this book to be the most superior memoir that I have ever read. I like the RHCP. I can't say that I am obsessed or I even love them the way I love other bands. But I can say that Flea has always piqued my interest with his on stage energy and the way his body really feels the music. He is a guy that I could dance with a concert. I can't stand those boring head bob-bers.
The book is inspiring. I have found myself searching for bigger and brighter words, expanding my own vocabulary. I have also found myself speaking to myself with a different tone, a more loving and accepting one.
