Review: Anyone who reads the Product Details for this Kindle e-book (File Size: 95 KB; Print Length: 28 pages) will certainly realize that this entry is not as exhaustive as some anticipate. But I can affirm that the Doctrines of Grace (yes, all five points!) define orthodox biblical Christianity (as stated in other contexts by Spurgeon). Those not familiar with the Doctrines of Grace should read this short treatment by Spurgeon to get the flavor of them. Consider the following quotes from this e-book.

"If anyone should ask me what I mean by a Calvinist, I should reply, "He is one who says, `Salvation is of the Lord'." I cannot find in Scripture any other doctrine than this. It is the essence of the Bible. "He only is my rock and my salvation." Tell me anything contrary to this truth, and it will be a heresy; tell me a heresy, and I shall find its essence here, that it has departed from this great, this fundamental, this rock-truth, "God is my rock and my salvation." What is the heresy of Rome, but the addition of something to the perfect merits of Jesus Christ -- the bringing in of the works of the flesh, to assist in our justification? And what is the heresy of Arminianism but the addition of something to the work of the Redeemer? Every heresy, if brought to the touchstone, will discover itself here. I have my own private opinion that there is no such thing as preaching Christ and Him crucified, unless we preach what nowadays is called Calvinism. It is a nickname to call it Calvinism; Calvinism is the gospel, and nothing else."

Review: I have come to love Spurgeon and all that he penned or spoke. Though this would more rightly be called a pamphlet than a book it was nonetheless a worthy read. As I explore the roots of my faith I clearly see God's hand in the raising of men dedicated to the truth and empowered as only He can empower. After Luther and Calvin there is no one better to make the case for Calvinism than Spurgeon.

For anyone curious about the doctrines that are part and parcel Calvinism this little pamphlet will do the job. It is further perfected by the loving hand Spurgeon applied to the writing. His reverence and love of holy scripture resonates with every word. Spurgeon had a knack for brevity and so it is with A Defence of Calvinism. Not a word to spare and nary one wasted. A Defence of Calvinism leaves the Arminians and the semi-Pelagians no place to hide. Spurgeon makes his case and does so from scripture (is there any other way?). Still believe that man has a hand in his salvation? Bet you won't after you read A Defence of Calvinism.

As sad as it is to say I have begun to wonder if Spurgeon wasn't the last of the theological titans the world will be blessed with. If there is a near second it would have to be R.C.Sproul in my humble opinion. This "five point" Calvinist highly recommends A Defence of Calvinism.

Title: A Solid, Brief Statement

Review: Spurgeon's works are as popular now as they have ever been in modern times, but one fact many of his fans either do not recognize or know is that he was a very staunch Calvinist. In this brief address, Spurgeon stakes out his belief in the sovereignty of God, while defining his Calvinism against both Hyper-Calvinism and Arminianism, though certainly not in extreme depths of detail. Spurgeon's eloquence and passion still thunders through years, as he explains just how he sees the Doctrines of Grace as of supreme importance in properly understanding the Bible and embracing the full, true nature of Christ.

Potential buyers should understand that this is essentially a booklet; it is of a smaller size, and consists of excerpts from Spurgeon's writings elsewhere. A reader will probably navigate this in 30-45 minutes, perhaps less, but that does not discount the value of what this is. Do not expect a full Systematic Theology or an exceedingly in-depth look at the tenets of Calvinism. This is a brief testimony and explanation of Spurgeon's position on this key topic. If you or a friend were unsure of Spurgeon's strong feelings on Reform Theology, or simply wish to gain a few well-written points in defense of the same, you would certainly benefits from reading this short work.

Title: A Brief Defense of Parts of Calvanism

Review: I love Spurgeon. I really do. He is one of my hero's without a doubt, but I was not impressed with this booklet. I guess it was in no way his fault, everything he wrote I completely agree with and I think he did a great job at writing thoughts on parts of Calvinist Theology. That being said I would not have called this "A Defense of Calvinism" rather I would have named it something like "Some Thoughts on Calvinism". It's a very brief little booklet so don't expect an exhaustive defense. Spurgeon just spends some time speaking of Grace, and God's sovereignty. If you want a large, extensive defense of Reformed Theology then this is not the booklet for you. But if you want a quick read with some great points on why Calvinism is so beautiful from one of histories greatest proponents there of, then this is a good buy. My personal favorite part is actually just the beginning with a quote from Spurgeon on how Calvinism, though systematically laid out in a new way by Calvin, is not something that began with him. It is a theology that can be traced back to Saint Augustine, and arguably Paul himself. The booklet will give you a small glimpse of the beauty of Calvinism.
