Review: Wow - this field guide for pelagic birds sets new standards for pelagic birding.A weakness of many past pelagic guidebooks is they do not capture what the pelagic birds look like on a bouncy boat with one or two pictures/artists renditions and varying light conditions . This book remedies that with multiple pictures carefully chosen and similar bird species are shown side-by-side.Pelagic birding may be my favorite type of birding and I am an experienced pelagic birder and sometimes co-leader on trips from northern California and I am amazed by the content of this book. For instance, the section on murrelets captures what to look for to ID this difficult bird family and is just one of the many areas where the authors share their expertise to make the reader a better birder.One of the authors -Steve Howell, I know personally although I have not seen him or been on a boat with him in several years. My nickname for him is the "Secret Weapon" as he just seemed to find/see birds before anyone else, even the many expert birders on the Shearwater boats I have been on from Bodega Bay in California. In this book, Steve has shared his knowledge - and pelagic birders will really benefit from studying this book. I think this is the best book of the many books Steve Howell has written.

Review: I purchased this book for an Ocean Cruise around the southern end of South America and this book was perfect for Shearwaters, Albatross, Skuas, Petrels, Penguins, and others. The book is well constructed with a heavy duty flexible cover with nice photos, maps and descriptions. Oceanic bird identification is daunting and this book really helps with subtle field marks. Ocean Birds of the World covers world-wide oceanic birds as the title suggests and may be more detail than needed (358 pages) for most US-only birders unless you frequent pelagic trips. My only feedback is that I would like to see a map for each species. While the maps were great, many of the species do not have maps so one must rely on the written description. I own dozens of bird books and this is one of the best.

Review: Steven N. G. Howell’s on Birds books are always very well done. This book is no exception it has wonderful photos that help to identify Oceanic Birds. Got this book to start learning Pelagic birds and I couldn’t be more pleased.
