Review: Keith O'Brien does a masterful job of putting a human face on the environmental tragedy at Love Canal in Niagara Falls, NY. His exhaustive research paints the first complete picture of the extraordiary events in the neighborhood where toxic waste was dumped for decades by Hooker Chemical, a subsidiary of Occidental Chemical. This toxic stew bubbling up led to miscarriages, cancers, and deaths of the vulnerable children who were poisoned at school, on the playground, in the their yards, and even in their homes. Housewives like Lois Gibbs fought the company , the state, and federal government as they tried to move their families out of the area. The Homeowners Association found powerful allies in Roswell Park Cancer Institute's Dr. Beverly Paigen, legislative assistant Bonnie Casper, and the courageous Luella Kenny, Kenny, who lost her 7-year old son to nephrosis caused by exposure to toxins, confronted Armand Hammer at Occidental's Shareholder meeting where she was treated with contempt and condescension. Gibbs pressed her point with a dramatic action, risking arrest.
This is a cautionary tale applicable across the country, that shows how the most unlikely heroes can make a change.

Review: I grew up 30 miles away and as a teenager did not know Love Canal was happening. Later a friend and I drove through this abandoned area. It was fascinating! Since then I have met one of the attorneys involved and some families that lived in the area. This book tells the true story of Love Canal and all these unsuspecting people went through.

Review: Loved this book! Author did an incredible amount of research and his style makes this a great nonfiction narrative to read. Did not want to put down. A must read if you live in Western New York. Our book club had a Zoom meeting that one of our members arranged to have him join in along with a former resident who was delightful and informative on what she personally endured living near the chemical dump site. She lost a young son due to the chemical contamination of Love Canal. She was incredibly well spoken on details surrounding what she and the people endured and are still impacted by. Highly recommend!

Review: This was an incredible book. Thoroughly researched and thoughtfully assembled. The joy of the book is that it reads like a deeply compelling mystery. The tragedy of the book is that it is all true. The author is to be commended for tracking down every document and first-hand account of this heart-breaking story that has been played out countless times since Love Canal, and still goes on today in so many communities. Review: My book club read this story of the Love Canal catastrophe in the 1970s. Even though all our members lived through this period, details were revealed in this book that we had no way to know at the time. And the writing propels you through the story in a way that you just don't want to put it down. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in environmental issues and what a small group of determined citizens can do to address life-threatening events in a community.

Review: I cannot recommend this book more highly. I knew the name Love Canal and had visited the area a few years back, but I did not know the scope of the story. The author does a brilliant job of telling a complex story in a very engaging yet informative way. For anyone who is interested in the environment, early environmental activism, the early history of the EPA, Superfund sites, and the tip of the iceberg which was Love Canal, this will be a compelling and unputdownable read.

Title: Unbelievable True Story

Review: My son was born in 1977 about the same time as the news of problems at Love Canal began to surface. Living close to Niagara Falls and just starting my own family, I was outraged at the thought of toxic chemicals threatening the health and well-being of unsuspecting young families. Having followed the news accounts as they were developing, I thought I knew the whole story — wrong assumption. Keith O’Brien’s book on this subject was so thoroughly researched and investigated; he uncovered documents that were stored in boxes in the homes of several of the key individuals in this story. This book uncovers numerous behind-the-scenes activities that impacted the lives of so many and were quite a revelation. Thank you, Keith, for bringing this story back into our consciousness. While these events occurred almost 50 years ago, the events and lessons are as relevant today as they were back then.

Review: Thank you, Keith O'Brien for telling the story of my father's home. I was only a toddler when these issues began to surface (pun intended) and only understood what happened from a child's perspective. Unfortunately, this is yet another tale of corporate greed and government negligence. These stories need to be told!! You did an amazing job of giving this story life while documenting and verifying every fact and detail. Again, thank you.
