Priestdaddy: A Memoir by Patricia Lockwood Book Review

Title: I am just not cool enough...
Date: Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2018
Review: The premise of this book sounded fun and I could imagine great stories from a devilishly incorrigible child raised in a home with a father who is a priest. There was so much potentiaal, and some of the stories are, in fact, humorous. I am just not cool enough to understand the dialogue of the author who is always overly dramatic, uses oblique references and wants to shock you at every turn with her attempt to be the complete opposite of her religious parents. Coupled with her "way too hip" references on all things from Twitter rants to a whole chapter devoted to semen stains on a hotel bed, I just could not finish this book. I am far from prude and initially laughed at her mother's response to the stains on the bed, but after about 200 slang references to the "fluid" I just could not read/listen further. I also pride myself on trying to stay relevant to the younger generatiion's terms and references, but she just goes way too far to shock the reader. I get it, it is her attempt to be cool and hip, and in reality I believe it is her personality to be the shocking and diabolically rebellious child of her religious parents. In her defense, half of what grated on me was the narration in the audiobook version which I believe was read by the author and completely over-acted with grating and unbelieveably over done voices! Could have been a really good book, but there were just too many obscure references for me to finish the book.

Title: Irreverent, funny, poignant autobiography
Date: Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2018
Review: This book had me alternately in stitches and poignantly moved by the author's life with her aloof, guitar-playing, bombastic, slovenly, congregation-caring, Catholic priest of a father and her OCD, warm, hilarious, nurturing, charismatic mother, and her outraged, sensitive husband and her scarred siblings who somehow survived a pretty oppressive upbringing with the saving grace of humor and their mother's unconditional love. Lockwood had me laughing out loud for extended periods with her astute observations described so accurately and poetically that one could see, taste, smell or hear the scene just as she did. A cautionary tale by a talented writer that painfully reveals why this priest should not have also been a parent.
However, her mother was a saint! Loved this book!

Title: Wow... such unlikable, awful people!
Date: Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2019
Review: Because the main focus of the book--the dad who became a Catholic Priest--was so dysfunctional, close-minded, narcissistic and depraved, it was hard to find any of this funny in the least. It was painful to read and eventually, when I realized that this was simply a snarky expose of a truly pathological family with no real insight or emotional depth on the part of the author, I stopped reading it. Life is too short to spend with such unpleasant people with no hope of being anything but.

Title: A Beautifully Written Memoir
Date: Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2021
Review: I loved Patricia's writing, turn of phrase, and refreshing ways of seeing. It was a joy to read. The subject matter -- loosely: religion (Catholic), familial relationships and such -- might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I detected a great deal of push/pull and affection for it all in this memoir. And THAT is refreshing. Because life, family, religion -- well, anything and everything -- is NEVER perfect but it teaches us, it shapes us, and it is what gives us our own unique perspectives. I love that she may be wildly different from her family yet still look at them with compassion and love. I recommend this book for a great immersive reading experience.

Title: A Not-Quite-Typical Conservative Midwestern Family
Date: Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2020
Review: I find it funny all the discussion about married priests that goes on among Roman Catholics. People seem to forget that we already have quite a few married priests in the Church. Some are Eastern Rite and some are priests that were formerly another faithβ€”Anglican, for exampleβ€”who were married before converting. If you’ve ever wondered what growing up in a rectory might be like, here’s a chance to find out.

Ms. Lockwood’s father is a Roman Catholic priest, and he is certainly not the holy man one might expect. He comes across as profane and a bit crazy. Of course, Ms. Lockwood herself becomes the rebellious daughter one might expect after some of the typical choir loft experiences in her youth.

Still, in the end, this is an interesting family story. It’s not that different from what you might find in many conservative Midwestern households. And yet, the fact that Father is a father does add a twist that puts real flavor in this book.

Title: Confused
Date: Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2021
Review: I am mystified at why this book received such accolades when it was published. The premise (married man with children who becomes a Catholic priest told memoir style by one of his daughters) is interesting but that’s kind of where the interesting part ends.

The writer comes across as extremely smug, insecure, and pretentious in a way that screams β€œPLEASE FIND ME INTERESTING!” when really her childhood isn’t that interesting. Her father sounds like a withholding narcissist who is borderline abusive to his wife, the other siblings are barely mentioned, and really the author skirts a lot of big issues like sexual abuse in the Catholic Church (it’s casually mentioned several times but never really discussed), the understanding of a child that having a priest as a father is very unusual, and the overall family dynamic with all 5 children. The writing is also uneven oscillating wildly between completely flat and so thick with florid hyperbole as to be near unreadable in parts.

It was a disappointing read as I have enjoyed many of the author’s poems. Sometimes poetic abilities do not translate into other types of writing and I think that’s what happened here.

Title: Memorable, hilarious, please write more!
Date: Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2022
Review: Priestdaddy is a hilarious adventure that I wish I could have seven different versions of for every time I need a book with substance that will also make me laugh out loud in the middle of the night when I can't sleep. And what a strange world Patricia takes us into - the behind the scenes of a priest and his family. I left wishing I could be friends with her because I know if I were having a bad day, I could call Patricia and she would make me laugh but also give me sage advice that would stay with me forever, just like her book.
