Review: This very fun book is written as a memoir of a New Zealand cellist who left a career performing and recording with an internationally known string quartet to settle in Moscow, Idaho, and teach lucky young cellists at college. It's got a lot of characters in it for a memoir, and they all feel like you might run into them on the street, although they've been dead since the 18th century. Dr. Wilson knows the history of cello pedagogy as if it were her own family history, including the odd uncles and eccentric geniuses, and remarks at one point on "Leopold Mozart, new father to little Wolfgang Amadeus and an early prototype for helicopter parenting," which sounds about right! She also knows the history of cellos as an instrument and how they were played, and of course knows the Bach Cello Suites inside and out. And she knows Bach, and as you read through this highly entertaining book, you'll get to know him too, as a complex, fussy, intense virtuoso and genius who didn't like his job or his bosses and was bitter about his paycheck. Readers who are musicians and especially cellists will get the most out of the detailed discussions of the movements of the cello suites, but even people who aren't musicians will enjoy learning how this antique music from the 1700's was put together, and what the influences were. Later developments in the design and technique of string playing changed how the Suites were played (in which we learn we don't even know what Bach meant by "cello") , and the people who were the master cellists of their days influenced the performances of the music in sometimes extreme ways.

Cellists play this music all their lives, from the accessible but not easy first Suite to the impossible sixth one, and Dr. Wilson is no exception. We learn about how she began to study with her first teacher, whose warm and loving approach was still challenging, to her Russian teachers who had clear ideas about what she needed to do--"Little witch, you must practice!!"--and on to her graduate level teachers and colleagues. She is insightful about her role in her own life, and aware that she was not necessarily the easiest student or colleague to deal with--but also that she grew up, and continues to grow into a thoughtful, passionate, insightful, funny writer and musician. Another interesting aspect of the book is how she came to live as an immigrant--a white one, with a British-adjacent accent--in 2016, and how the tumult of the country and its loud messages about immigrants affected her and her family. Citizenship became a safety measure in the days when people were getting picked up at work and sent away from their families, and while she had her papers from the beginning, that didn't mean she felt safe.

The huge project of learning and playing all six Suites in a single performance is one that is clearly a challenge (how does one convince someone to buy one a five-string cello, which one can't afford on a professor's salary, but which is necessary for the Suites?) And how does one manage to be a new mother, playing cello right up into the last weeks of pregnancy, and still move forward with professor-ing, writing, and learning this incredible music?

This is a wonderful book to sit down with, in a comfortable chair with coffee nearby, and perhaps a playlist of the Suites at hand, although they aren't actually necessary to enjoy the book. I loved the winding journey from New Zealand to eighteenth century Germany to London, Texas, the touring world, and finally the energy of a college town with all the passion and politics of Bach's time. Dr. Wilson is an insightful and entertaining author, and I hope you'll treat yourself to her story.

Review: There are not enough superlatives available to describe this work. It is perhaps the finest piece of writing about the life of a musician and her music that I have ever encountered. Miranda has woven her biography around her experiences with Bach and his six unaccompanied suites for cello, and she has pulled off this difficult venture with unequaled charm and grace. She has not only opened up her life to her readers, she has opened up her mind and her very soul. Reading her work is an intensely emotional experience, and one comes away from the book feeling a visceral connection with Miranda, her family, and her music. Along the way we also find out a lot about Bach and his creative genius. This is a woman who has done her homework! As a work of scholarship about the Baroque era it ranks up there with the best. Melding sophisticated musicology with deep personal narrative is extraordinarily difficult, but Miranda has not only accomplished it, she has knocked it out of the park. I believe that anyone with a soul will appreciate this work. I cannot recommend it too highly.

Title: Refreshing Take on the Bach Suites

Review: As a cello student just getting started with the Bach Suites, I am always looking for more information and reflections on the subject. Reading about them intertwined through the life of this artist and professor offered up a unique perspective. It's always fascinating to see how much this collection of music really moves and inspires people. I'd highly recommend it to anyone on a musical journey of their own through Bach. It's also a really pretty cover and would probably make a nice gift.
