Title: A collection of personal essays

When assembling a collection of personal writings representative of an attempt to get to know herself, her soul, her home (a small museum filled with unusual objects); some men; her dog; cooking; the ecstasy of swimming; the beauty of the English language; the art of play; and the work of making art, the reader might assume at first that it’s a jumble of incompatible ingredients.

But in fact, it is not. There is a strong thread, which writers call “voice,” that ties together the zigzagging yet rich menu of Eddy’s inquiry “into this wild chaotic spectacle of life.”

Consider the essay in the section Stayin’ Alive. Titled “Extravagant Dinners for One” it is more than an argument for cooking. It’s a hefty acknowledgement that good food—let’s call it great food—is transforming. Yes, at its core, it is about love, yet Eddy’s writing is equal parts NYT writer Melissa Clark and the late NYT food columnist Molly O’Neill. Clark cannot admittedly read an unusual cake recipe that uses Japanese rice flour without proceeding immediately to scour for that ingredient and bake it. O’Neill could not wake up early enough to get eight pies in the oven to welcome food writers to a retreat. For both those seasoned food journalists, it’s the visual, the gustatory anticipation, the heart and soul of feeding others.

Yet Eddy, knowingly or not, shares this passion. She writes about Romanesco cauliflower in a similar way: she eyes it at the farmers market, and doesn’t just purchase it, she grabs it, seizes it, marveling at its pale acid-green color, the “fractal (like totally hallucinogenic) pattern of its florets,” and it hypnotizes her. That’s right, it’s just a vegetable. But Eddy is grounded in the same way as notable food writers who chase after the sensuality of food and the emotional payback of feeding others. Love is made manifest, declares Eddy, in the realm of the edible.

Throughout this volume of personal essays, some reading like blogs, a reader will find all the evergreen topics, such as the angst of beginning or ending a relationship, the avoidance of bringing oneself to the task of writing, and the need for camaraderie when you work alone. In every chapter, Eddy makes it clear that she not only searches for meaning in life but is preoccupied by seeking it.

What I find so joyful is making the journey with the author as she eyes the accumulation of detail that she must clean up. We know exactly how she lives inside her head before she sits at her desk to write: must organize, tidy up the joint a bit. Move things, piles of stuff, stacks of magazines, dog-eared catalogs she will never buy from. To render an apartment ‘artistically’ lived in becomes a tedious, huge, maniacally important task just because someone’s coming to dinner.

I totally enjoyed this collection because it’s a “sound montage” of conversations within herself, sometimes restless, but always perpetually churning and always provoking thought in the reader.

Title: Artist and entrepreneur Ellary Eddy opens up about life and lessons learned

Review: An entertaining probe of a woman’s realizations and philosophy, served up in a voice sometimes chatty and self-effacing, sometimes probing and intellectual — and always engaging. Although written more with women in mind than men, the book will appeal to any reader for whom taking stock is a preoccupation.

Early on, Eddy acknowledges her chapters “swerve between the silly, the sincere and the serious,” given that she views life as “a highly important topic which …merits a huge dose of humor.” Her book covers a difficult childhood, the challenges of raising a daughter alone, professional struggles as artist/ screenwriter/online publisher, and existence as older-yet-still-sexy single woman. Added to the mix is diverting rumination on lessons learned. Throughout, the text is laced with a good dollop of said humor.

A lover of language, the writer does often digress into rabbit-holes of word derivations. At first I was impatient with these, only to be sucked in by Eddy’s acute revelations. Elsewhere, much of the book is straightforward memoir, like the author’s visit to a Zen Retreat in the Sierras. Spiritual context or not, the author distills these moments in non-ethereal, quirky syntax: “So much knowledge seems to bubble up during these four days, I feel like a bottle of shaken Champagne.” A cautionary chapter about her dating history includes a wry observation that her “lovers became an excuse for exuding poetry.”

A section headed frankly as “Libidinally Speaking,” begins with these lines:

“If I could find you, my phantom other …
I would draw you to my waters.
Dunk you in them.
Then swish my words around you, like little goldfish,
Nibbling at your ear,
Glittering around you.
Dazzling you.”

This is not a book for binge-reading in the wee hours in hopes of being lulled to sleep. It seems to me one best savored in small doses, and pondered afterward. Eddy declares and defends her belief that the purpose of human existence is to “discover (and accept) who one is…and give that self full expression … the mightiest struggle of our lives.” Her Argument makes you want to sit down and reconsider your own. What is it that you think is the mighty struggle of your life? Have you fully considered the path you’ve followed? How far have you looked for guidance? Clearly, Ellary Eddy has thought deeply and searched widely, wringing elation and wisdom from the effort. Her entertaining essays make for an irresistible backward look through her days. At almost precisely halfway through the book comes a section entitled, “Joystruck.” “Joy,” says the writer, “is a Verb,” insisting that “happiness is “in your hands, and nobody else’s.”

“I want to radicalize life,” the author says elsewhere, “open it up to deeper scrutiny, play with it. And I want you to join me.” Who really, can turn down an invitation like that?

Smart, funny, introspective and frank, Ellary Eddy offers a collection of superb essays on what it's like to arrive "at a certain age" in the present place and time. She's a fine writer, a talented artist, and has lived the kind of eclectic "out there" adventurous life that makes for great storytelling. You can dive anywhere into this collection of anecdotes and philosophies and come up with an interesting take on everything from sex to art to reconciling with a tricky upbringing. You'll come for the snappy writing style, and stay for the keen insights. Recommended with pleasure.

Title: A lovely read

Review: I took a long time reading this book, enjoying it in “sips”, as it were. I am the same age as the author and was able to enthusiastically relate to parts of her experience, as well as to be titillated (always wanted to use that word) by the differences in our lives. She captures a lot of what it means to experience this age, and the process of aging...and her uplifting attitude about it is much appreciated. It’s a terrific book, a lovely account of a creative life and a perfect escape from these crazy times. I’m about to gift it to three friends whose birthdays I have missed.
