Review: “Rookie” is a tour de force. As Fred’s cousin-in-law, I had the privilege of spending a long weekend with him on campus and on a recruiting trip in the early 2010s. Watching him in action really backs up everything that you read in this book. From his guidance on setting goals, to establishing relationships in a competitive but collaborative environment, Fred deftly maneuvers you through the changes and growth that you will be experiencing. There are so many good lessons in this book, including the good, common sense fitness and equipment advice that will be vital to an athlete’s success. Above all, this is a coach’s perspective, so the chapters on what a coach is thinking are likely the most vital to your success. If my nieces end up choosing to play softball in college, I’ll be giving them some copies of this book!

Review: I wish a book like this had given to me when I was entering my first year as a collegiate softball player. It’s an insightful and empowering book written by a veteran coach with extreme knowledge of the game and how to treat his athletes. There are so many obstacles to overcome when becoming a college athlete. Team drama, academic struggles, managing a life balance. This book provides the support and guidance a first year needs to wade through the treacherous waters of joining a collegiate team and how to conquer their fears and learn to thrive.
