Title: Fight your fear of stats with this book.

Review: A great book which explains, in 'understandable' detail, the statistical tests used for understanding the world around us. It describes each test, how it works (mathematically), when it can/can't-should/shouldn't be used, its weaknesses, alternative tests, and so on. It's so easy a cave man can do it! I wish I had this book before I started my graduate education at Auburn University. (MS, Fishery Science).

Seriously, it make statistics much easier to understand. I took Experimental stats 1 and 2 at Auburn, they were good classes, but this book is just so good.

It's an absolute MUST-HAVE for any aspiring biologist. You can't be a biologist without coming to terms with stats.

Review: Used my advisor's copy to study for my preliminary exams. I loved it so much that now I am buying it. I agree with the reviewer who said this book is not for the beginner. That being said, there is a rich background of historical, philisophical, and practical points about statistics and how it applies to science that I just loved it. I recommend this book to any graduate student in an ecological field. If you need to bone up on your statistics and already forgot everything you learned in your clinical statistics class (because there weren't any ecological examples), this book is for you!

Title: For the Scientist with little statistical background

Review: A Primer of Ecological Statistics was a fantastic read and I'm not even finished. This is not a textbook. it's more like a quick, background and how to manual for the classic statistical tests and reasoning. If you're not well versed in math, that's okay. They use logical examples that are communicated well through both stories and proofs. Pick this up if you're going into the sciences or statistics with little background in statistics, want to learn how to write well-formed hypotheses, or just need to be able to read scientific journals with better comprehension. You won't regret it.

Title: A great tool for better understanding of ecological stats

Review: This text has really helped me gain a better grasp on the stats I use in fisheries ecology. Even in grad school I struggled with stats. We used Zar's "Biostatistical Analysis" text, which is a great book, but very dense and sometimes hard to read. The examples that Gotelli uses are very applicable and easy to follow. Since buying the text, I have met two professors where I work with this book. They both like it as well. I think it's a great supplemental or stand-alone text to increase your understanding of ecological statistics.

Review: I bought this a few years ago because it was required for a field ecology course. Over time, it's proven to be the best statistics resource that I have - even better than the internet. My field is behavioral ecology, and while it's a little light on the non-parametrics often necessary for behavior (Sokal and Rohlf for those), it's absolutely great for the statistics necessary for ecological and morphological measurements. Very well written, right on that delicate balance between overly dumbed-down and overly jargoned-up.

Title: Applied statistics clearly explained

Review: This is a GREAT book to be introduced to statistics applied to the environment and populations. It provides ready-to-use information for any kind of experimental design.
The title could even be misleading, because: (1) this is not a primer, it explains A LOT of analytical procedures and experiments (I never saw a primer explaining how and when to use a two-way ANOVA split-plot); (2) it could be a great reading also for people coming from different fields of study (from sociology to chemistry).
