NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A riveting inside account of the unprecedented rise to power and unmatched political legacy of the first woman Speaker of the House, by award-winning journalist Molly Ball Nancy Pelosi’s opposition to Donald Trump has made her an icon of the Resistance, featured in viral memes clapping sardonically at the president or ripping up his State of the Union address. But the real Nancy Pelosi is neither the shrill partisan featured in thousands of attack ads nor the cautious corporatist reviled

Review: Nancy Pelosi is a statue in Washington politics, albeit one whose rise to the Speakership is not always well known. Ms. Ball's book is well-written, concise, and succinctly conveys Speaker Pelosi's early political influences, especially her Baltimore political family and her social gravitas as a Bay Area grande dame, mother, and Democratic fundraiser in 1970s San Francisco. When Ms. Pelosi re-arrived in Washington as a congresswoman after nearly a 40 year absence in 1987, the forces that shaped her were applied to astute deal making, policy building, and partnerships behind doors, leading to where she is today. Ms. Ball does a wonderful job tracing these developments. "Pelosi" is truly a gem to read, especially in today's times.

Review: I don't usually like political books, but I devoured this one. Thank you Molly for bringing out the qualities that make for a great champion of the people and a wonderful human being. As a retired truck driver, I feel better knowing that Nancy Pelosi is changing the gears.

Review: In the first ten pages - one, writing about how Pelosi's mother was such a force who could do anything, yet she invented a product but her husband kept her from marketing it, and she would have done something else, but her husband wouldn't sign off on it. In the prologue, when Nancy is six, she sees her father sworn into Congress, on page 5, when she is seven, she sees her father being sworn in as Mayor - ? I wanted to like this, but if you find two inconsistencies in the first ten pages, ...well.

Review: β€œIf this book has a thesis, it is that you needn’t agree with Nancy Pelosi’s politics to respect her accomplishments and appreciate her historic career.”Ball writes well and objectively; she doesn’t hesitate to call a spade a spade. She came to see Pelosi as β€œA planner, a strategist, a leader who saw around corners…” She nails β€œKellyanne Conway, a sycophant with a penchant for disingenuous spin.”Two things I learned from reading this excellent biography: it was Nancy’s mother and not her dad as presented by the press who most trained her in the ways of politics, and President Obama is to be reproached for his treatment of Pelosi. He came to appreciate her, but only after ignoring and undervaluing her for the first months of his administration.Nancy Pelosi has fought hard to give women a place at the table. We have much to be grateful for in this regard.

Review: I think Molly Ball is now with Time, but I read her more often when she was with the Atlantic. I generallyfound her articles to be interesting and not overly partisan. But the tone of this book is different becauseshe is not giving her views, but allowing Speaker Pelosi to present her own point of view in the story. There'sa lot of feminism, and she was often the only woman in the room in different situations. Most readers whoare interested in Pelosi will enjoy those perspectives. It is often pointed out that Pelosi is not from San Francisco but the more industrial Baltimore. Her fatherand brother Tommy D'Alesandro Sr. and Jr. were mayors I think. But when Pelosi went to San Fran withher husband Paul, she took up socially liberal causes such as gay rights and abortion. She helped to buildthe modern Democratic party centered around social liberals on the east and west coasts. In this she wasinspired by the noblesse oblige of the Kennedys, and was the typical limousine liberal. Pelosi became verycontroversial in the Catholic Church because of abortion, among others like Gerry Ferraro, Mario Cuomo, TedKennedy, John Kerry and Joe Biden. Meanwhile other members of her traditional Italian family remainedpro-life. So there were key moments where she had to hold back on the issue of abortion. One was in passingObamacare, with the amendments to prevent covering abortions. She had to face the feminist sisterhoodshe led, and tell them the amendments were needed to pass Obamacare. More recently, AOC and the Squadhave tried to kick out the few remaining pro-lifers. Pelosi remembers her family and thinks that's ridiculousand a broad coalition is needed, as the very partisan Rahm Emanuel had shown. This narrative will introduce the reader to all the House Democrats since the 80s, with speakers Tip O'Neill,Jim Wright, and Tom Foley and their rivalry to Newt Gingrich and Tom DeLay, then John Boehner andPaul Ryan, each of whom had a distinct approach to leading their caucus. Pelosi had a friendship andrivalry with Steny Hoyer over many years, and John Murtha was a key friend. Key black leaders included John Lewis, Elijah Cummings, JimClyburn and Charlie Rangel. Dick Gephardt was sometimes partisan, but more moderate than the aggressiveapproach that Pelosi took after him. Others on the left included David Bonior, Barbara Boxer (who wasalso quite pretty and later went to the Senate in 92), Jan Schakowski, Maxine Waters, Henry Waxman andGeorge Miller. Other radicals were Dennis Kucinich and Bernie Sanders.Pelosi was hawkish on China ever since the incident in Tiananmen Square in 89. She was highly partisanin the Obama years, even when Obama was using lofty postpartisan rhetoric. In Ball's narrative, thereis significant tension between Obama and Pelosi. Pelosi learned politics the old way where you haveto count votes and apply pressure to get things done. Obama was aloof and above the fray. In theMcConnell and Schumer era, McConnell was quite a strategist at obstruction, and Pelosi strategizedagainst him. As one might expect, Pelosi's narrative isn't sympathetic to Sarah Palin and her ruralpopulism. But whether on the right or the left, urban or rural, if Pelosi's challenges were because ofbeing an aggressive woman, she would have some things in common with Palin. The narrative closes with Adam Schiff and impeachment. Pelosi held off her caucus all year in 2019,but after Mueller's testimony there was Trump's call to Ukraine about the Bidens. In Ball's narrative,Pelosi had prepared her whole life for that moment. In 2020 of course, the covid-19 has swallowedup the impeachment issue.

Review: When I first heard about Pelosi I was expecting a biography of the woman. Thankfully this is much more. Ball describes Pelosi's family and upbringing and her slow dive into politics. The book hits high gear when she hits the House and goes to warp speed when she becomes speaker. It describes Pelosi's strategy and dealing. There is a wonderful anecdote with Pelosi and AOC that summed up Pelosi perfectly. The book reminded me a little of A House to Die On in the way it looked at each class of congress and their issues. I read the book is 2 sittings.

Review: In the afterword of this biography, Molly Ball wrote "If this book has a thesis, it is that you needn't agree with Nancy Pelosi's politics to respect her accomplishments and appreciate her historic career," Ball demonstrated her thesis very well; the book left me unable to determine whether Ball likes or agrees with Pelosi. Left me not caring, either. The book fairly emphasized both Pelosi's strengths and her faults -- it;s hard to call them "weaknesses" when speaking of a woman so strong. it was a marvel of objective reporting about a public figure who will eventually be ranked with founding fathers in her influence on the Republic.
