Title: Great book with a couple of minor issues. ****Update after a year and a half of use****

Review: This is much better than the last edition. Cogentin has been added and the SGAs have cross-taper directions from each one to each other one. Very handy. Clinical pearls are still one of the best parts of the book. I keep this on my desk and use it every day. It's my favorite reference book.

Some "available doses" for several medications don't seem to be available in real life, and vice versa. I'm not sure where Stahl got information for those sections but they seem to have frequent errors.

Atomoxetine is confusing and likely inaccurate: it lists a general mg/kg max dose for kids but then says that "other individuals may require" significantly more than this, and doesn't discuss further. A Pubmed search yielded information suggesting that MOST pediatric patients are dosed higher than Stahl's recommended max.

Overall I still highly recommend this book. I talked a friend into getting it recently and she loves it too.

*****UPDATE: After about a year and a half of use, the binding on my copy is failing. Pages are falling out and I'm having to tape them in. I expect better from a book meant as a desk reference. This didn't happen with the last edition. I wonder if the publisher has changed the quality of binding. I thought about having Kinko's replace the binding with a spiral but I don't think the margins are big enough. Hopefully in the future the publisher will improve the binding quality, offer it with a spiral binding, or both.

Title: Be careful who you purchase from!

Review: Do not purchase from Weslaya-R. The book I received was "new" but was made shoddily. Some pages printing was blurred, the pages were unevenly centered to the point that the page numbers were sliced off, and after 3 days of light use the binding split and pages fell out. No one else in class had a falling apart book or blurred pages. I repurchased the book from TEXTBookAMAZING, and was sent a good quality book. Amazon refunded my money from Weslaya-R when I returned the book (Amazon lockers are great, btw). I have included photos of the two books to show the obvious differences.
I almost always check for the reviews of sellers before I purchase anything, and skip them if the rating is less than 90%. This one slipped past me some how.
This book is required for school, and is considered gold in psychiatry. Since I just started, there is nothing here to say that experts haven't already said.

Review: As a psychiatric prescriber this book has come in handy on a daily basis. I've had this book for two years. It is at the top of my reference list, because it is a great resource for medications and the layout is very organized. It is easy to find the information needed. It has all the basic information needed plus additional practice tips and clinical pearls. It is heavy but there is pertinent information throughout, and it covers a variety of medications. The binding began separating about one month after use. I've taped the pages together. It'd be nice if it came in a spiral binding.

Review: Best psychiatric prescriber guide so far. Organized and colorful. Print is good size. Wish it could be spiral bound. My binding is starting to come loose after three months. I wish there was more on prescribing in children's and adolescents or a prescribers guide by stahl that was for children and adolescents. It often recommends to leave that type of prescribing to the expert, however, people using this book are usually the experts. For example, guanfacine a common medication for children with ADHD doesn't give the dosing recommendations for children. For adult prescribing this is great. It gives initial, usual, and maximal dosing. Also gives monitoring parameters. Again just wish there was more on child and adolescents or a separate book.

Title: Love Stahl

Review: I love Stahl, he makes this so clear. Some of his med titrations seem a little aggressive, so I often halve the dose when starting my patients on a medication. He's also definitely more comfortable dealing with a Lamictal rash - his suggestion is if it's "mild" continue the treatment, but discontinue if it is more threatening. I wouldn't feel comfortable determining the severity of the rash (and sadly there's a 10% chance of a run of the mill rash) so I just d/c the medication if one develops. I wish I was as confident as Stahl! He's a rockstar!

Title: Worth owning

Review: Fantastic reference...lousy binding. I originally purchased this book in August of 2015. The pages started to come out from middle within 2 months. I limped along with it for a while thinking it was just a bad apple, then ordered another book July of 2016. The darn thing did the same thing. I'm just sick about it. This is a spendy book and now I have two that are defective. I don't misuse or over bend the binding. I need this invaluable reference, but the publishing quality stinks. 5 stars for reference...1 star for book construction.

Title: A little frustrated: The book is heavy but the kindle poorly formatted

Review: I needed a reference prescription guide that I could refer to constantly, even if on the go. Stahl is what was repeated recommended, but when I received the book I realized that it was far too big to want to carry everywhere I go. It make be smaller, but it's definitely a desk reference.

I was disappointed to find that the digital version is basically just the text of the book. It has none of the useful formatting or color-coding that makes the book so approachable.

So in the end, I had to choose: Useful book or portable download....and I actually choose the book. Why can't publishers understand that the digital version has to be AT LEAST as good at the book?!

Review: Stahl has a gift of making difficult content user friendly. Overall excellent resource. I would have given it a 5 star if the SSRI/SNRI sections had added more of the discriminatory side effects peculiar to each as opposed to what appears to be a copy and paste. He missed some vital factoids that he taught in his Psychopharmacology text.
