Title: Exquisitely direct, refreshingly enlightened, and riveting from first page to last.

Review: L. E. Decker’s writing is as well-honed as her observations of five years of like and work in Jerusalem and the occupied territories are even-handed and acute. Bombs and Bougainvillea is a deeply engaging, detailed and insightful view into her and her family’s experiences in a part of the world fraught with controversy. In its seductively concise chapters the author sketches scenes of joy and sorrow, the commonplace and the extraordinary, the gentle and the vile, the sympathetic and the merciless without preaching, proscribing, or passing sentence. The predominant tone in most of her stories is humanely reassuring.

As a reader who has worked from time to time in the Middle East, I found “Bombs and Bougainvillea: An Expat in Jerusalem” exquisitely direct, refreshingly enlightened, and absolutely riveting from first page to last.

Open “Bombs and Bougainvillea” and you will immediately understand why it was selected as the Non-Fiction Book of the Year by the Scottish Association of Writers in 2018.

Title: Must read. More than a typical moving and living abroad book

Review: When I first saw the title of this book, I assumed it was just another moving abroad book. That notion was quickly put to rest. This was a book about history as much as it was,of,moving abroad or living abroad. It was full of details that I had to look,up. It covered so much ground on what it’s really like living in the Middle East specifically Israel and Palestine. It was a master class on how the people live and work in a contested territory. A must read.

Title: Honest Perspective

Review: I really enjoyed reading "Bombs and Bougainvellea" as it was an honest and sincere persepctive from an expat neither Israeli Jew or Palestinian. Getting insight on the how the other half lives was rather enlightening. I learned a great deal, in addition Linda is very funny. I found myself chuckling a great deal at her some of her stories and quips. Not to politicize this response but although the sides are not equal as one has more privilige and power than the other that's not what this book was about. I really appreciated how the story was told, it was sincere with an ernest attempt to explore and appreciate what was found. Again highly recommend because it's a great begining to learnng about two cultures do different from your own.

Title: Not just another expat story or travel guide

Review: I love reading takes about English speaking families who move to another country. This one, however, is different and special. Decker both educates and enlightens her readers about life in Israel for both Jews and Arabs as well as the expat family. She also provides a unique and personal tour guide to the important attractions in Israel. Glad I read this book.

Review: As I read “Bombs and Bougainvillea” I was transported to many parts of the world I have only imagined. Reading this account of Linda’s posting left me both in tears and laughing when I most needed to . I’m privileged to personally know the enchanting Decker family. I am humbled reading this book , Their courage and kindness’ throughout the book runs the constant thread of their love for each other . Always willing to laugh and charm and comfort in any situation .

Biblical characters (King Noah?) to political misinformation make everything the author describes suspect.

Title: Balanced Descriptions of a Volatile Area

Review: This book deserves more than 5 stars. I didn't know what to expect, but was impressed both by the story and the writing. In the author's notes, it's mentioned that the experiences were written for family and friends, but someone encouraged her to publish it as a book. I think this is what made reading it so enjoyable; it was like sitting with a good friend as she shares her time living in Israel.

Any move requires adjustments, but some here were rather unusual - all the young military with guns slung over their shoulders, as well as the many Jewish holidays where everything closes. She relates, in such a balanced way, the dangers as well as the delights. She describes beautiful scenery, cozy cafes, interesting shops, then mentions going into the safe room when sirens sound as casually as she'd mention going into the kitchen.

A section at the end explains the various Jewish holidays and traditions, which I found very interesting. I'd recently read Mary Blye Howe's "A Baptist Among the Jews" and couldn't help comparing the two books. Ms. Howe studied Judaism intensely through classes, instruction, attending synagogues. But by living there, this author learned through personal experience.

Highly recommended; an inside look at an area we only hear about through the conflicts in the news.

Title: Packed with fascinating anecdotes and insights

Review: I didn't know what to expect with this memoir when I started reading it. I won it in a draw and somehow had the feeling it was going to be deeply serious. I was wrong. Linda Decker's lively and engaging writing style and her wry sense of humour bubble out of every page of this fascinating book. With her background of living in Jordan for several years and her knowledge of middle-eastern culture, the author shows her empathy for the complexity of the situation in Israel, and Jerusalem in particular. This account is a personal memoir of the family's time in the country, but it also gives valuable insights into the cultures of all the city's diverse inhabitants. A great read and one I've thoroughly enjoyed.
