An emotional tale of identity, sexuality and suicide derived from personal experience about three teenage boys who struggle to come to terms with their homosexuality in a small Western Australian town. On the surface, nerd Zeke, punk Charlie and footy wannabe Hammer look like they have nothing in common. But scratch that surface and you'd find three boys in the throes of coming to terms with their homosexuality in a town where it is invisible. Invisible Boys by Holden Sheppard Book Review

Name: Richard L Pastore
Rating: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Title: An honest and discerning perspective elevates this YA novel
Date: Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2020
Review: Taking place in a small, rural Australian town, Invisible Boys is a coming of age tale of three boys in the process of personally coming to terms with being gay. It has a depth of honesty that can only come from an author's personal experiences, and this is what gives the novel it's worth.

Modern attitudes toward homosexuality have shifted so rapidly in the last two decades, that there may be a false sense of "everything's okay now" or close to. But it isn't. While the fear of physical violence that, say, teens from my generation have been reduced (note, not removed), the psychological and emotional pains have not. For, despite greater acceptance, the challenges individuals face, who simply are being who they are, are gut-wrenching to watch/read.

And this is where the skill of the author comes into play. The focus is on the internal perspectives and thoughts of the boys. While there are distinct differences in their starting points: "This is who I am" - "This is who I may be" - "This is who I am not"; there is overlap as well. Each one, at some point, hits against a wall of hopelessness, with each choosing a path to get around it. As a reader, you sense immediately that the emotions and reactions experienced by the main characters are from insights borne out of personal introspection..

As an example, there is one scene which, out of context, seems perfectly commonplace. Picture a father beaming with pride on the day of his son's marriage. Pretty typical - one many of you have seen or experienced. But now consider it from the point of view of another son who is gay. The cold, piercing knowledge that this is a moment he will, given the circumstances of his father's beliefs, never experience is heart-breaking.

But I would have to say, the primary attribute of Holden't style that drew me in the most, is his sensitivity to the subtleties of human behavior. The specific words chosen, the small actions taken - or not taken, the personal shifts in points of view, all work to raise each character above any potential stereotype. Those little telling details of who we are, always fascinate me and I'm delighted Holden was able to capture them.

All told, this is good read. If you're LGBTQ, it will assuredly evoke memories from your own life. If not, it will help give some perspective to everyday events you may have taken for granted during your teen years.

Title: Amazing
Date: Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2020
Review: I sit here crying my eyes out for those who struggle day in and day out like the boys in this book. Those who have taken their own lives because they couldn’t find the love and support they needed from those who were supposed to provide just that. I wish I could reach out and embrace every one of you and be that support. And those who refuse to give that love to you should be utterly ashamed of themselves

This author has let us into the world of truth. Of personal struggle. Of hope. Of resilience and yes, of heartbreak. An absolutely amazing read and Amazing author.

Title: One of Aussie YA literature's most important books.

Review: A harrowing, authentic, deeply honest, and slightly traumatic look at growing up gay in a country that holds traditional masculinity high upon a pedestal. This book spoke to me, it reflected a lot of my own struggles as a gay youth in 90s Perth, and it left me weeping in bed at the end.

This book is not always easy to read, but it is one of the most valuable things I have read in a long time and something I heartily recommend to anyone who was, is, or knows someone like the boys in this novel.

Title: Claustrophobic Reality of Small Town Life
Date: Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2020
Review: 'You'd expect it in a city, but not here, of all places. Sydney. Perth maybe.'

This dialogue epitomizes my memories of life in a small Australian town. The sense of limitation that exists in a town where football, surfing and cars are the centre of life. To have a life without these as lynch-pins is a cause for suspicion, to be seen as not like other people.

Invisible Boys does a great job of creating this sense of claustrophobia. It presents the lives of boys who are made to feel they don't belong in a town where not belonging is shameful, not just for themselves but their families. The book captures the way different personalities respond to facing impossible situations they should never have had to face, and the consequences of their choices.

The language is a well suited to representing life in a small town; a great balance of simple descriptions with occasional effective flourishes to bring the depressing banality into stark contrast. The wry humour present in both the dialogue and narration could not be more suited to understated style of Australian communication, reinforcing the authenticity of the characters and relationships.

Invisible Boys is a wonderful text that will resonate with anyone forced to confront the world from a place outside the margins.
