Title: How Rail Came to the Land of Cars

Review: LA has always been considered the home of car culture, but the fact is that Los Angeles County has one of America's largest rail transportation networks. But that rail network didn't come quickly or easily; "Railtown" chronicles the political struggles that created LA's rail system.

The Pacific Electric Red Cars helped build and expand the LA suburbs, but with the 1950s and the expansion of the LA freeways, public transportation in LA went into decline. As early as the mid-1970s, ambitious plans were announced to build a rail network in LA, but it took some time to build the popular support, line up political backing, and find revenue sources to start building the Blue Line to Long Beach and the Red Line to Hollywood and Universal City. The transportation authorities in LA faced a lot of challenges in making the stars align and faced determined opposition, but by the 2000s LA had the beginnings of a rail network. The book introduces us to the personalities involved and the key events involved in building the rail system.

Railtown covers a long history and covers some complicated subject matter, but shares the story in terms that make everything accessible to folks who aren't transportation wonks or political junkies. Even knowing how the story ends, it was interesting to learn how much had to happen to make rail in LA possible - and how many times the plans could have been derailed. The only real drawback to the book is that it hasn't been updated to include what's happened since 2008, since LA won the bid for the 2028 Olympics, and how the Republican takeover of Congress and the White House has impacted the system planning and operation since. Great reading for folks interested in LA history and how politics work in southern California. Recommended!

Title: Railtown... Cartown or Bustown?

Review: With perfect balance of brevity and detail, this book takes you on a trip though history and into our urban future. As a northern Californian, I had no idea at the time the titanic battles to create a rail system, nor the trade offs needed to fund it. As a transit rider, this book put many issues in perspective. The political battles for huge public works projects are not uncommon, but for transit, each dollar spent on attracting new riders could have been spent to keep existing riders. Although only one of many well developed themes in the book, this helped balance my perspective on the difficulty balancing the rolls of capital and operations investments. As we face a world in dire need of more transit, these issues should be considered by anyone who rides or plans a future. Another theme answers the question, why does rail go where it does?

Review: For those who live in LA and wonder how we ended up with the Metro rail system that we have, this is a superb read. Elkind is a great story-teller who understands the subject material incredibly well and takes the reader along the journey without overwhelming you with details.

For those who have either never been to LA or think it's just the car-infatuated post-apocalyptic landscape as it's often portrayed in popular media, this book provides an eye-opening insight into the all-too-familiar politics that exist in any environment.

Los Angeles may be late to the party in its (re-)development of a rail network, but, as Elkind's book portrays so well, it is a network that has been considered for decades, and that is thankfully finally coming to fruition.

Title: Awesome ride through Metro's rail history

Review: A fantastic read that intimately explores the history of rail development in Los Angeles. Elkind has really done his research, with extensive interviews and references to historical internal Metro documents, news media, political minutes, public statements, etc. It manages to be readable and enjoyable while remaining deeply informative. Can't recommend this book enough to anyone who has ever questioned the scope or merits of LA's rail system.

I only hope that Elkind revisits this project in coming years to update it as Metro continues its rail expansion.

Title: Fascinating Page Turner

Review: Ok. This book is about trains, transportation and infrastructure, which are not sexy or gripping to most people. And yet, this book is a page turner. I constantly recommend this book to people and speak of it on podcasts because it is both entertaining and educational. One of the best out there.

Title: Best Book for LA's Modern Rail History

Review: No other book captures the history and complexity of LA's modern rail system - light and commuter. Must read for history, transportation and public policy aficionados, and Elkind's access to personal interviews and accounts are unmatched, even by other academic papers and publications, as they do not capture the evolution of LA's multimodal approach to transportation alternatives, and the social and legal obstacles that stood in the way.
