Review: Since this was advertised as “the first and only commentary on the Buddhist master Longchenpa's essential text on Dzogchen” from Tenpa’i Wangchuk, I was eagerly anticipating its release. I am pleased to say that it was well worth the wait! First, the translation was done by The Padmakara Translation Group. Given the many excellent books that I’ve read by them, I have come to expect nothing less than an impeccable translation, and this book did nothing to diminish my respect for them. Second, this modern “word commentary” (as opposed to the “meaning commentary” provided by Longchenpa) was written by the revered 20th century Nyingma School monk, scholar, and tertön Khangsar Tenpa’i Wangchuk (1938-2014). There is information about him online so I won’t belabor the point here, other than to say that we are fortunate that this authentic Tibetan Master composed these commentaries, along with his other writings awaiting translation. In the book’s introduction we learn more about this:

“In response to enthusiastic interest and doubtless with the wish to preserve a tradition the fragility of which had been demonstrated all too clearly by the persecutions of the twentieth century, he produced several texts on the Great Perfection teachings of a kind, it is said, that had never been attempted before. It was his lot, so his biography tells us, to do what no other scholar had done before him: to express in writing something of the explanation lineage of Longchenpa’s thought. It is thus that, among other things, Khangsar Khenpo Tenpa’i Wangchuk composed unprecedented commentaries on two of Longchenpa’s Seven Treasuries: The Treasury of the Dharmadhātu and The Treasury of the Fundamental Nature. Furthermore, these two commentaries are, to our great good fortune, word commentaries: detailed explanations of Longchenpa’s actual text. Celebrated for their clarity and ease of expression, they have been specially devised to provide the aspiring student with a means of access to Longchenpa’s sublime teachings.

As Tenpa’i Wangchuk says in his preamble to the second of these commentaries, translated here, Longchenpa’s Treasury of the Fundamental Nature ‘establishes the definitive view of the secret class of pith instructions’ of the Great Perfection. Correctly implemented, it has the power to bring those endowed with the necessary karmic fortune to the highest accomplishment in a single life.”

“The Precious Treasury of the Fundamental Nature” is a profoundly important text, designed to provide students with Direct Perception of the Great Perfection view of primordial purity, in part through the practice of trekchö (i.e. “cutting through”). Tenpa’i Wangchuk said that both this book and “The Treasury of the Dharmadhātu” (also by Longchenpa) “are distillations of the teachings of all three classes of the Great Perfection (the mind class, the space class, and the pith instruction class) and contain crucial points for the understanding of the view and practice of trekchö, the teaching on primordial purity.”

This amazing book also explicates the “four samayas” (nonexistence, evenness, spontaneous presence, and single nature). These receive a short summary in the translator’s introduction, followed by a thorough examination in the commentaries themselves. The first section of the book consists of Longchenpa’s root verses. In the second section one finds Tenpa’i Wangchuk’s insightful commentaries where we are reminded that, “The nature of absolutely everything in phenomenal existence, whether of samsara or nirvana, is the dharmatā, ultimate reality: inexpressible and inconceivable awareness. It is the ultimate enlightened mind, the luminous expanse of the great perfection.”

While I do not possess the extensive knowledge of Dzogchen and/or Buddhist philosophy that “applewood” and “Book Drawn” have (the two Amazon reviewers that I always look to for clear, thoughtful, and thorough appraisals of these types of publications), I do hope that my review here, such as it is, has been helpful. For those of you who are interested in Longchenpa and his teachings on the Essentially Empty, Luminous, and Compassionate Display of Awareness (i.e. All That Is), then this great new book is, in my view, a must-have!

2/3/22 Edit: The comments by Amazon reviewer “Kuayin” are correct -- I even have Keith Dowman’s excellent book and have reviewed it (Doh!) so I should have been more careful in how I worded this. The first translation with commentary of this Precious Treasury was published in the U.S. in 2010 by Wisdom Publications by Keith Dowman entitled “Natural Perfection”
A wonderful translation with Keith’s brilliant commentary well worth Studying and “Treasuring”
(Read the Amazon 5 star commentaries- Here’s an example:
"The warm breath of experience has brought a fresh springtime through the dedicated work of Keith Dowman, in which the frozen words of the past thaw out and work in ways that move us." -- James Low, author of Simply Being)

I just received Fundamental Nature so I cannot comment on it as of yet

Review: I wonder for whom this book was written. The translation team seems terrified of the Tibetan language.

I have been reading Richard Barron's Longchenpa translations since 2001, they are fabulous. My books are filled with notes and cross references penciled in.

In this present book, The Precious Treasury of the Fundamental Nature, I struggled to find even transliterated Tibetan terms.

Longchenpa's magic is in his very use of language. Even a student with minimal Tibetan language skills, a copy of de Koros and Chandra Das dictionaries and a box of sharpened pencils can spend years admiring and dwelling in the extraordinary ability of Longchenpa to express complexity simply.

This translation of The Precious Treasury of the Fundamental Nature will rest quietly, unopened. Even the cover looks like a pre-publication review copy.
