"And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life." - John 5:40

This is one of the great guns of the Arminians, mounted upon the top of their walls, and often discharged with terrible noise against the poor Christians called Calvinists. I intend to spike the gun this morning, or, rather, to turn it on the enemy, for it was never theirs; it was never cast at their foundry at all, but was intended to teach the very opposite doctrine to which they assert.

Usually, when the text is taken, the divisions are: First, that man has a will. Secondly, that he is entirely free. Thirdly, that men must make themsel

Title: A Key To Understand Calvinism
Date: Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2017
Review: One of the key issues between Calvinists and Arminians is how they view 'The Will Of Man'.That man has a will is not a point of contention, but the state of man's will(after the fall)is at the heart of where they differ in their views.Martin Luther was mightily used of the Lord and he considered his most important writing to be 'The Bondage Of The Will'.How one's view of man's will, affects their thought on 'God's Saving Work' was a major factor in Luther's soteriology. Spurgeon quotes Luther's classic work-"If any man doth ascribe aught of salvation, even the very least,to the free will of man,he knoweth nothing of grace and he has not learnt Jesus Christ aright." Mr.Spurgeon expounds John 5:40 'And you will not come to me,that you might have life;which he notes is one of the major texts that Arminians use to promote their position on 'The Free Will Of Man'.

The initial point the 19th century Baptist preacher makes is that men, after their first father disobeyed God,are dead.John 5:40 implies that men are dead because-"...men need a life more than they have themselves." God exhorts men to go to Christ for life.-"No being needs to go after life if he has that life in himself." Was there a time when man had the life that John 5:40 is urging him to seek? Absolutely! It was before man's fall, and the life which he had was lost, through the disobedience of the first man Adam.

Surgeon uses the term legal death as part of God's judgement upon him due to his rebellion against his creator. The day Adam ate the forbidden fruit he died just as God said he would(not physically, that would come later, but spiritually). The whole human race was condemned by Adam's one act of disobedience. The sentence of death affected the whole soul of man.-"It entered the conscience;it operated on the soul,on the judgement,on the imagination, and on everything." That man died spiritually is a certainty, but what effect did this have on 'The Will Of Man'?(All of Adam's descendants enter 'This Life'-dead in trespasses and sins' according to Ephesians 2:1).-"His will lost its power always to choose that which is good." Even the regenerate man(the believer, the new creature in Christ)does not have that ability fully restored in this life(They can now do good, but also can still do evil). This is the continual struggle that believers face, until they reach 'The Celestial City' -Romans 7:19 'For the good that I would I do not:but the evil that I would not, that I do.' As one abides in Christ, walks in the Spirit, looks to Christ to strengthen them(they can do that which is good in the sight of the Lord).-'Apart from me you can do nothing' Christ asserted.

The sentence of death awaits its final consummation-"Eternal death is the death of the soul." God has provided a way of escape from legal, spiritual, physical and ultimately the eternal death of the soul.Any of Adam's fallen descendants can only escape God's condemnation, due to their sin,by going to Christ for life-"In Christ Jesus there is life ",apart from him death and judgement awaits you.God sets before you 'The Way Of Life' and 'The Way Of Death'-Which will you choose?

Though dead for a century and a quarter Spurgeon's written ministry is still being used by the Sovereign Merciful God whom he served.Your soul will be greatly enriched by the written legacy he has left.Let God's mighty servant slay 'The Goliath' of 'Free Will' in your heart and mind and if you've wrestled with aspects of 'The Doctrines Of Grace' they will likely soon be subdued.

Title: The last part on Arminian prayer is gold
Date: Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2020
Review: In 2016 I read quite a number of works by the famous English preacher Charles Spurgeon and since then I have desired to read more of his work though sadly I havenโ€™t been able to read any of his works until now in 2020. This booklet is Spurgeonโ€™s defense of Calvinism by responding to John 5:40 which some Arminians in his day thought it was โ€œone of the great guns of the Arminiansโ€ which Iโ€™m quoting from Spurgeon in the opening sentences in his booklet. What Spurgeon aim to show in this booklet is how John 5:40 is actually a support for Calvinism instead.
Thereโ€™s four mini-chapters or section in the book. Spurgeonโ€™s four points is based upon the verse John 5:40. Chapter one is titled โ€œMen by Nature are deadโ€ followed by chapter two titled โ€œIn Christ Jesus There is Lifeโ€ and then a chapter on โ€œEternal life is given to all who come.โ€ Finally the last chapter is titled โ€œBy Nature No man will come.โ€
Although this was originally a sermon by Spurgeon delivered on December 2nd 1855 it is timeless; people can benefit from reading it today especially since more than ever Christians wonder about our human will and salvation. People definitely misunderstand Calvinism as well and Spurgeon makes it clear Calvinist believe in a will but that will isnโ€™t totally neutral. Some readers might benefit from reading more about a compatibilist will versus libertarian free will elsewhere but still thereโ€™s things one can benefit from this writing. The most powerful point of the booklet was towards the end when Spurgeon said โ€œYou have heard a great many Arminian sermons, I dare say; but you never heard an Arminian prayerโ€ and then examined an Arminian prayer. His point here is that โ€œAn Arminian on his knees would pray desperately like a Calvinist.โ€
I recommend giving this a read if you are new to the topic of Godโ€™s sovereignty, our salvation and the role and limitation of our will.
