Title: A wonderful way to help your child start to build on what they personally believe.

Review: This book is really amazing! I bought this one after buying "What Do You Believe?" Because we live in the bible belt, I am aware that my almost four year old is being exposed to many cultural and religious things that I do not agree with so I think it's important for us to expose her to what everyone around her believes as "The Truth" before she is really confused with no answers. She has already started asking so many questions, and it's really helped me start to help her make her own way through what she believes. My end goal is not to make her believe what I believe but for her to grow to believe what SHE feels is the truth. I haven't found it to be anti-religion, which I think is very important considering most of our relatives and friends are religious and/or Christian. I do not want them demonized for what they believe. I just want her to realize that it's okay to NOT believe everything that they do. I think this book fits that bill perfectly! I haven't read completely through "What do you believe?" yet, as I realized on the first sentence that "The Belief Book" should really be read first, but from what I have read of both books, I'm very pleased. Since our little is so young, I think we're going to continue taking it slow and reading a little bit a time. It gives her time to digest what we read, talk about it, and then allows her to ask more questions as they arise when we continue reading more. Overall, I'm very happy with this book, and we plan to keep it around for years to come as we revisit mythology (we homeschool) and our girls have more complex questions that don't always have such simple questions for us to answer.

Title: Should have looked at the 3-Star and lower reviews first

Review: I'm an Episcopal priest, and putting together a program to facilitate an understanding/knowledge of world religions. I believe we have far more in common with people of other faiths than what is generally understood, and with the rising level of hate crimes in our country we need to look at building bridges with those who might think a little differently than us. That said, I was looking for books that worked through basic belief structures of other faiths, and this book was recommended as "Frequently Bought Together" with other texts I'd been looking at. With a 4.5-Star rating I thought it would be worth a look, and based the purchase on that with a quick read of the overview. The author is an atheist. Knowing that didn't bother me. Upon reading though, I find it very condescending. I stopped reading part way through the "Myths" chapter because of the style and approach. Had I done a tiny bit more research in the more critical reviews I would have seen other folks say the same thing. Anyway, if you're looking for a well rounded and child/youth friendly presentation on belief structures of the world religions then steer clear of this book.

Title: Perfect for our Family

Review: First off, let me start my review by stating my husband was raised Christian, I was raised agnostic but currently we both do not actively practice any one religion. We wanted to find a book that could explain all the religions of the world to our 6 year old daughter (and eventually to our 2 year old son as well). Our goal is that we want her to choose her own belief system for herself when she is old enough.

Yes, this book is written by an atheist and yes, he is geared more towards factual evidence/logical thinking. In no way does the author bash Christianity in this book or make it sound bad or wrong so all the people getting offended and all up in arms about this book being biased need to calm down.

I like this book because it explains how beliefs were formed, what terms like "belief", "myth", "evidence" etc mean. It also encourages children to ask questions if they don't understand something because it is questions that lead to finding the answers we need and questions that lead us to being as open minded as possible. I thought this book outlined the religions of the world but I was very pleasantly surprised to read what it was really about. The next book by this author "The Book of Gods" gets more into the belief systems/religions of the world.

One thing my daughter also enjoyed about this book was there are certain parts that encouraged her to write about what her God would look like, how they would act, and what types of things would it do.

Overall I found this to be very informative and my daughter enjoyed it as well.

Title: Too smugly atheist

Review: I wanted to find some books that could help my kids understand the different beliefs their friends at school have. We haven’t raised them in any religious tradition, so we wanted something that didn’t take an opinionated stance.

Other reviews have painted this book as an even-handed overview of belief and religion, but when I scanned it over before sharing it with my kids I found that it takes a strong stance in favor of atheism and tries to use a reductive “god of the gaps” argument to claim that religious belief all boils down to superstition based on lack of knowledge.

Even as somebody who doesn’t hold any religious beliefs I found this book’s tone smug and off-putting. It shows no respect for people who hold such beliefs, and doesn’t help the reader to understand them better.

Title: Disappointed

Review: I was very hopeful this would be a good book to give my kids a broad understanding of religion, faith, etc from the many perspectives in our world (including the perspective that is not religious). Unfortunately the book seems to have a strong agenda where it belittles the various presented views when it could have easily and more constructively just attempted to describe them impartially and with some respect. I say this as an atheist who certainly doesn't advocate any of the covered religions, but knows that a respectful and impartial approach is the right way to go.
