A gripping and emotional novel that will leave you wondering about the neighbors next door...
On a cold January night, Sharon Lemke heads outside to see a lunar eclipse when she notices something odd at the house behind her backyard. Through her neighbor's kitchen window, she sees what appears to be a little girl washing dishes late at night. But the Fleming family doesn't have a child that age, and e

Review: 1/5 STARS
I am so happy to be finished with The Moonlight Child โ the last 150 pages were especially excruciating. Overall, this book made me want to punch myself in the face.
I bought this because it had a high rating on amazon. This book is the complete opposite of โshow donโt tellโ. If you want flat characters, no character development, everything shoved down your throat with a rusty spoon, and a weak storyline, read this book.
The author explains everything โ and I mean, everything โ so that one can only assume she thinks her readers are either five years of age, or very stupid. Hereโs a couple of examples:
โAs Jacob got closer to the car, he had a clear view of his motherโs face, contorted in anger. She was so very angry.โ And, โThe lights were still on, and the exhaust coming out of the tailpipe indicated that the engine was still running.โ
The dialogue between the characters is awkward and unnatural. Perhaps the author had to google โhow do humans talk to other humans?โ and then produced some dialogue based off of those instructions โ and, there is very little dialogue in this book. Maybe? โ ten percent of the book is dialogue?
The crux of the story, the motivation to keep us reading for 420ish pages, is as follows: a dirty little girl was found wandering alone outside by a mother and son. The mother and son found where the girl lived - a dirty shack with a dead woman inside โ and so, decided to take her home and keep her. The little girl then spends the next three years in the house, with her bedroom hidden in the basement, and, every day, she has to do chores. The mother sometimes yells at her and one time, shoved the girl. The entirety of the book dwells on this โhorrid abuseโ and it is up to the nosey neighbor duo to rescue this poor, unfortunate little girl! DUN! DUN! DUUUN!
While the kidโs life is not ideal, it did not pull on my heartstrings that much. Iโm not asking for blood and gore, but there are a lot of worse things out there than being told to stay in the house and do lots of chores. I needed more than this for me to care for 420ish pages. The only reason I did not stop reading at about page 30, is because I just cannot start a book and not finish it โ especially when Iโve paid good coin for the stuff.
The whole thing was overall pretty silly, predictable, and annoying. Having finished this book, today, I feel as though a black cloud has lifted from me, and I have started the healing process. I hope to move on from this haunting experience with the arrival of three new books I recently ordered (I canโt wait to spend time with you again, Zane Grey xoxo).
Love,
L.A. Pokin
P.S. The LARGE PRINT version (that's what I ordered) is NOT true large print. It's more like medium print/just a little above standard print size.

Title: Secretive Neighbors

Review: Lindaโs Book Obsession Reviews โTHE MOONLIGHT CHILDโ by Karen McQuestion, NightSky Press, September 2020
WOW! Karen McQuestion, the author of โThe Moonlight Childโ has written a captivating, intense, intriguing, and memorable novel. The genres for this novel are Fiction, Mystery, and Suspense. The timeline for this story is set in the present and goes to the past when it pertains to the characters or events in the story. The author describes her dramatic characters as complex and complicated. There are some deep dangerous secrets, threats, consequences, and problems.
I appreciate the vivid descriptions of clues, plot, characters, and events that Karen McQuestion writes. Do you really think you know your neighbor? This reminds me of when I lived in another house, at another time, and I had wonderful neighbors. My neighbors knew everything that was going on in our house, and no one told them. At times I wondered if they were psychic. In โThe Moonlight Childโ, Sharon, an older woman realizes something is very strange at her neighborโs house and is convinced that she has seen a small child. The neighbors, the Flemings claim they have only a teenage son.
Sharon is not quite sure what to do, until Niki, a former foster child arrives to stay with Sharon for a while, on Sharonโs daughterโs recommendation. Niki starts to notice some peculiar activities as well. The unprofessional duo is determined to find out what is going on, at any cost, or danger. I would highly recommend this intense, and thought-provoking novel.

Title: Meh

Review: The glowing 5-star reviews convinced me to order this book, and now that I've read it I seriously wonder if those reviews are legit. The book isn't bad exactly, it's just incredibly pat, and not in the least suspenseful. The characters are not convincing: three young people, Mia, Niki, and Jacob, have all supposedly grown up with serious trauma, yet are the nicest, most well-adjusted, considerate kids you could hope to meet. The protagonist Sharon is just the perfect grandma. Suzette is maybe an interesting as a portrayal of a personality disorder. From early on it was obvious how the two separate threads connected, and how it would work out in the end. Not recommended.

Title: Compelling and Poignant

Review: Suspenseful and poignant from the first page THE MOONLIGHT CHILD is the story of mothers and children, one child in particular, who from a neighboring motherโs vantage point appears to be in danger, in need of rescue. But how far should she go to find out? How far would you go and what would you risk to save someone elseโs child? Fueled with a cast of characters who are relatable and deeply human, a host of secrets and outright lies, and a truly harrowing, ripped from the headlines issue, this novel will keep you up nights, reading quickly to the oh-so satisfying end.

Review: I was looking forward to the story but I just couldn't get past the writing. I felt like I was reading a junior high school paper.
