Review: I am an Industrial HVAC equipment mechanic with no "Modular Engine" design knowledge. I needed to rebuild my 5.4L 2 valve Van engine and wanted to increase the horsepower and performance in the process.
This book is well written. The information is presented in a manor that is easy to understand and well organized. Book would be very valuable for someone just learning about this engine design and mechanical techniques. Not intended for advanced level engine builders.
Very easy and enjoyable reading experience with many very clear informative illustrations with pictures and charts. Check out the contents page.

Review: This book is geared more toward the 2v 4.6 and 5.4 and aimed more at the Mustang enthusiasts. There is very little info for the 5.4 3v as found in the F series trucks. Engine specific data is also sparse, specifically: clearances, component dimensions. Also this book largely stops at about 2006 for the majority of its content. And I'm dealing with '08 through '12 3v stuff.

Title: Good Reference but has some errors

Review: All in all it's a great place to start and get a base level of knowledge. I recommend to not let this text be your sole source. Ford is notorious for having multiple changes in their engines that even occur mid year.

There is one error that is particularly glaring that needs to be addressed here:

On page 65 at the bottom under the head of, "Choosing the PI Cylinder Head", the author states that, "because F-series trucks and the Expedition were never fitted with PI heads, you must swap in PI induction and exhaust too".

The problem here is that the Expedition 4.6 most certainly came with PI heads. My stock motor from the factory on my 02 Expedition 4.6 has them on it right now. Casting number RF-1L2E-6090-D22D. 1L2E heads are PI heads.

Turn the page over to 67 and note at the bottom of the page under the heading, "Quick Head Identification" and you will notice that the author has identified the1L2E casting number as a PI head.

This is important to understand because the novice engine builder may take this assertion that no Expeditions were made with PI heads and use the wrong pistons creating a much higher compression ratio than expected with possibly damaging results. NPI heads typically call for an 11 cc dish piston whereas the PI heads require an 18 cc piston to keep the compression ratio lower.

Review: Cost too much for what it is ... It's a fun read....but really , not much useful information other than a history lesson...
They even waste pages telling you lists of tools you will need....., I expect anyone doing this already has the tools...wasted content ...and redundancy...., But a fun read....it would be great at $14.99....but as it is ...too much money.

Review: This is a good book to start with. It has good information on machining. That is definitely the author's strong point. This book is geared toward the passenger car engine, you will definitely learn how to build a great mustang engine. However if you have a Triton 5.4L 3V Flex Fuel V-8 you will be left with many questions . I just bought three more books SA books because of questions that still arose about the truck engine.
