Title: The Long View...

Review: Robert Heilbroner's "The Nature and Logic of Capitalism" offers a view of capitalism from 30,000 feet. It explains how capitalist property relationships allow the ruling class to discipline workers and suck up the economic surplus, while forcing individual capitalists to compete endlessly with one another. The result is a system of ever-growing capital formation and technological improvements, but one rocked by periodic crises and blighted by warped values. The book's discussion of the relationship between the state and the economy is excellent, as is its description of the competitive pressures that transform economies over time. And the remarks on the globalization of production and marketing -- written before NAFTA and the WTO -- are eerily prescient. (Because Heilbroner saw deeply into the essense of issues, the book isn't seriously dated even though it was written in 1985.) My only real complaint is about Heilbroner's abstract and ponderous writing style, which makes the book seem sketchy and dense at the same time. Beginners won't find "The Nature and Logic of Capitalism" easy to read, while readers already familiar with basic Marxist social theory won't learn much of anything new. In fact, I'm not really sure who the right audience would be.

Title: Why our economies are headed for Stagnation Station.

Review: This is mostly a scholarly text, written in 1985 (hence a bit dated) which lays out in a clear and comprehensive manner a vexing and confusing (and very poorly understood) economic matter - the theoretical and physical basis of what we know as Capitalism, but should more properly be termed The Permagrowth Economic Paradigm*. Capitalism like Permagrowth is an 'impossible' economic paradigm - the theory is teriffic, its just the reality is disasterous for both the humans and their environments alike. You do not find this inconvenient fact mentioned in the standard economic texts - its just not there! And for a very sensible reason. Interestingly, Communism, Socialism and Capitalism are just different forms of the same basic economic paradigm. The principle difference being how the 'economic surplus' that each must produce (to continue in existence) is actually owned and distributed. If you are a student of politics, sociology or economics you would do well to buy this text and keep it as part of your personal library. You may well have to refer to it again and again. Its well written, but you do have to pay attention as you go along. There is a short bibliography.

Title: Finally... a worthy and understandable explanation of the cult of Capitalism

Review: You cannot say that you understand Capitalism until you have read this book! Heilbroner explains the development behind the politics, economics, and CULTURE of capitalism. This, truly, is an education that you will get nowhere else.

Title: What capitalism IS.

Review: Heilbroner in this book attempts to show what capitalism is, and he looks to a wide range of fields to find the answer. Drawing upon Freud, Smith, Marx and a number of well known economists, philosophers and scholars, he argues that Capitalism is not a state but rather a process, that developed by the inner need of man to dominate and gain power. He contrasts primitive and tributary systems that accumulated surplus for use values with capitalism which seeks surplus for the creation of more surplus; Marx's M-C-M'. The rest of the book builds upon this notion of capital's relentless search for profits.
Although you may not completely agree with Heilbroner's analysis of capital, it is important to look into the mirror he holds up to the system we are in. Heilbroner recognizes the defects of socialism and communism as alternatives to the capitalist system, but he also shows that capitalism as a system is built upon domination by the political system and then exploitation by capital of those who rely upon the system for their sustenance.
Although it is a relatively short book for the subject matter it covers, it is quite dense. Heilbroner's prose at times was too cryptic for me. I don't know whether he intentionally made the work more difficult than it need be to impress, but he would have succeeded more in his purpose to persuade if he was clearer in his exposition.
What was not satisfactorily answered for me is why the appropriation of surplus value by capital is wrong. Heilbroner argues that the return to capital is really a misnomer as it is the appropriation of surplus value created by labor. But surely the capitalist in order to have an incentive to allow the use of his capital and the risk he takes when he enters the market, is entitled to a share of the surplus value of labor.
Heilbroner's book is a necessary one for all those who live in a capitalist society. It questions the assumptions upon which our capitalist system is based. For those of you who are free-market fundamentalists, this book should be a sobering experience. I think everyone, of whatever political persuasion, should read this book. After all, if the free market is as good as you think it is, what harm is there in trying to see what some socialist says about it.
