How can the church move forward in unity amid such political strife and cultural contention?
As Christians, weโve felt pushed to the outskirts of national public life, yet even within our congregations we are divided about how to respond. Some want to strengthen the evangelical voting bloc. Others focus on social justice causes, and still others would abandon the public square altogether. What do we do when brothers and sisters in Christ sit next to each other in the pews but feel divided and angry? Is there a way forward?

Title: Timely and Helpful
Date: Reviewed in the United States ๐บ๐ธ on July 3, 2020
Review: The conversation about faith and politics is often heated amongst Christians. As a pastor and resident of Washington D.C., author Jonathan Leeman is no stranger to this fact. His book, How the Nations Rage, is a primer of sorts to help Christians know how to engage in these conversations in a manner that honors God and is loving toward other individuals regardless of whether or not one agrees with their political ideologies or alliances.
The book derives its title from Psalm 2:1 which states, โWhy do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?โ In the early pages of his book, Leeman observed, โItโs my sense that one of Satanโs greatest victories in contemporary America has been to divide majority and minority Christians along partisan lines,โ (pg. 9). He wrote that, โ. . . confusing our judgments with Godโs turns our judgments into idols, which in turn divides the church and leads to injustices inside and outside the church,โ (pg. 10). On the following page, he expressed, โ. . . I am concerned that sometimes we let principles of Americanism determine the way we read Scripture, rather than letting Scripture determine how we evaluate principles of Americanism,โ (pg. 11). I found these thoughts to be helpful and convicting. He encourages readers, โ. . . as Christians who prize Godโs wisdom above that of men and women. . . strive to stop from time to time and say, โWait a second? Is this biblical?โ and be willing to throw everything off the boat if necessary,โ (pg. 10). Asking whether or not our political ideals or party allegiances are biblical is simple and very helpful. Upon Leemanโs suggestion of asking this question, I have found that I am continually asking it of myself.
There are many aspects of Leemanโs book that I appreciate. I greatly value his commitment to viewing politics through the lens of Scripture. I also really appreciate that rather than contributing to the division Christians already experience when it comes to politics, Leeman urges readers to allow Scripture to shape their convictions rather than seeking to enforce his own upon them. It was really fascinating to read Leemanโs discourse of how politics begins within the context of the local church. He addressed this on page 14 when he wrote, โThe local church should be a model political community for the world. Itโs the most political of assemblies since it represents the One with final judgment over presidents and prime ministers.โ
How the Nations Rage
On page 133 he said, โOur political instincts should develop by living inside the loving and difficult relationships that comprise a church.โ On the same page, he included a brief list of thoughts to help readers know what this might look like. He wrote:
โWelfare isnโt just a policy area; itโs a sister in Christ who accepts help, but only on her terms. What are you going to do?
Taxes arenโt just a public matter; itโs the financially strapped member of the body sitting at your kitchen table. How do you respond?
Racism isnโt just something we witness on the news; it lurks in our churches and in our hearts. Will you confess?
Immigration isnโt just a topic for politicians; itโs someone trying to join your church. Will you open the door?โ
I found these questions to be quite convicting and Iโve read them many times. These questions are a great place to begin when it comes to evaluating how one allows their views of politics to be shaped especially if they claim to be a Christ follower.
Iโm thankful for the wisdom Leeman offers on page 152 regarding the role of conviction in the political decisions Christians make. He began by asking, โWill you maintain Christian unity?โ and answered with, โIโm simply pleading for you to make space for other Christians to disagree with you, to leave these matters in the realm of Christian freedom, to preach the Bible, and to lower the emotional temperature on these kinds of conversations.โ
On page 173 Leeman included twelve lessons for Christians on how to engage politically and live as ambassadors, not as culture warriors. Leeman introduced the section with the idea that, โ. . . political success for a Christian equals faithfulness, not results. God calls us to efforts, not outcomes. When a Christian confronts a nation and leaders, whether in a Senate bill or in a gospel tract, opposition will come. But that does not change our task: Christians must speak faithfully as prophets and priests on behalf of Christ.โ
He spoke more of this on page 198 when he said, โWe make sincere efforts to persuade others to our points of view. But we do not fear losing, because we know that our God has already won. Every political result that plays out in this life is under Godโs sovereign control and is being worked out for the good of those who love him and who are called according to his purpose (Rom. 8:28). This knowledge liberates us to be the kind of happy ambassadors who are always faithful, and sometimes (with Godโs help), effective.โ
If you are a Christian who is also a republic, democrat, somewhere in between, or politically homeless, I know youโll enjoy this book and greatly benefit from it.
I really enjoyed reading How the Nations Rage and am pleased to give it my highest recommendation.

Title: Understanding the conservative Christian voter
Date: Reviewed in the United States ๐บ๐ธ on May 25, 2019
Review: If you are a voter in the United States and you have conservative Christian friends, this book offers a sobering insight into how these friends may be thinking. Leeman's primary goal is to remind his readers, that is, his target audience of conservative American Christians, of facts about how Christians are called to behave towards each other. Although these are points the rest of us--Christian or not--might have hoped were already fairly familiar to the target audience, Leeman's review of them is certainly beneficial and probably accounts for the high rating this book gets from most reviewers.
The sobering part of the book is how Leeman teaches his target audience to view their role as American citizens. For example, Leeman explain in great detail how his readers can distinguish between those existing US laws they should obey and all the other existing US laws they are free as Christians to secretly disobey. We all know that, throughout history, there have been individuals, both Christian and non-Christian, who have publicly refused to follow a law and also publicly declaring their willingness to accept the legal consequences of their decision. But for Leeman, secrecy is definitely on the table--especially if it can save the Christian a few bucks. The reader is encouraged to seek the counsel of other conservative Christians but Romans 13 is explicitly -not- on the table.
The most sobering part of the book for me as a voter in the United States is how Leeman teaches his readers to explain themselves to rest of us, that is to those of us, Christian or not, who have the wrong "values". Leeman stresses repeatedly that the ideal explanation his readers can offer the rest of us for their voting decisions is "because God said so." He allows a variety of other techniques to "win" against us but reminds his readers of the grave danger of these techniques: any appeal to concepts such as "justice" or "the common good", etc. is ultimately flawed because those of us with the wrong values cannot know what any of those things really are. Concepts such as "justice", etc. can only safely and properly be used when talking privately with other conservative Christians to make a decision. In short, only conservative Christians can determine the right way to vote and it's not possible for them to explain what's going on in their heads to the rest of us.
I recommend this book for anyone who wants a hint of the possible thinking behind some of the puzzling things our conservative Christian friends say and do.
