Review: Well, I knew before I bought this book what to expect--I featured it on my blog a few months ago after it was released and I had to read it. After all, this is Joan Rivers we're talking about here! From the first page to the last, I could not stop laughing. She truly hates everyone and herself, just as the title suggests.

Some of the comedy in this book is really ignorant, and if you don't have a thick skin, or you're not accustomed to Joan's outbursts without thinking, but rather speaking first, then I would definitely not suggest you read this--because it will not be for you!

I laughed so hard until I cried, but I've always liked Joan's sense of humor where others find her rude, crude and downright ignorant, which she is all of the above, and is proud to admit that throughout the book.

I have to say, I pretty much agreed with just about everything she hates, and some things she hates truly shocked me because she had the balls and guts to actually write what she feels. I give her credit for that. I don't know if I could have been that brutally honest, and people talk about Simon Cowell being brutally honest and rude, they obviously have never heard Joan's comedy.

This book is so damn hilarious and I loved it, but I warn you, like I said, if you don't like her standup, you will not enjoy this book.

Title: Funny but a little dated

Review: I am a true Joan Rivers fan. I have tried to see as much of her as possible on TV, Youtube, etc. It was because I love her humor so much that I bought the book.
I have to say that the book often made me laugh. I especially enjoyed the first half as it was caustic and sometimes a bit shocking (which is what I would expect from Joan). However, I found that in the second half of the book, some of her jokes seemed a bit forced and I had heard some of the jokes before. It seemed that Ms. Rivers tried to incorporate new, young celebrities into her humor, but somehow the jokes just didn't work and sometimes they read like they were old jokes with new names put in them.
Some may think that starting so many paragraphs with, "I hate" gets a little tiring, and it does. Stil, I enjoyed the book and do not regret buying it. Joan Rivers stays true to her style of humor in this book and I don't think many fans will be disappointed in it.

Review: I wasn't exactly sure of what to expect here. I enjoyed Jaon Rivers back in the Ed Sullivan days but her reality show, QVC (or is it HSN?)moments and Celebrity Apprentice appearances did not endear me to her new found humor. Imagine my surprise when coffee spewed from out of my nose from laughter. She is mean spirited, no doubt (see Book Title) but most of this book is just darn funny. Yes, I felt a bit guilty while laughing at these constant putdowns but what's wrong with a little guily pleasure anyway. Would I buy a follow-up book? Probably not. Towards the end "I Hate Everyone" started to run its course. While I'm still not a big Joan Rivers fan I do thank her for a couple of days of laughter.

Title: Humorous, but vulgar.

Review: I've loved Joan for many years and have always found her to be very funny, even when she's a bit over the top. There are definitely many funny lines in the book, a lot laugh out loud funny, however, a lot of what's here is quite vulgar, even for Joan. I've been around the block a few times, am a tough New Yorker, and certainly no prude, but still thought this was a bit too crude. I even told my wife that I thought she should skip reading it, that she'd find it just too raw and inappropriate.

Still, if the language, potty humor and many BJ references don't bother you, go ahead and read it, laugh and enjoy!

Title: Embarrassingly Weak, Aimlessly Bitter and Gross

Review: I can't believe I just wrote that title. I am one of the most supportive, ever-following-of-her-career fans of Joan Rivers. But even moreseo, I feel like I have a voice in responding to her new book because I am no ordinary fan. I was actually a guest on Joan's television show... and we bonded. She shared personal reflections with me. This was in the mid-1990's during the years she and Melissa were findging their place in the world after Joan's husband left the rest of us to suffer it out down here. I have admired Joan Rivers ever since "The Adventures of Letterman" where she was a voice in a cartoon on "The Electric Company", my favorite show at the time in the early 1970's. As an adult, I followed her all the way through The Tonight Show and into every project she mustered. And you just have to give her so much applause and credit for all she accomplishes and for what she has endured. I raise her to the heavens in my admiration of her strength, raw energy, and especially, her ORIGINALITY and razor-sharp, dry wit. It seems I can't get enough of her. I even pre-ordered this book and had it shipped IMMEDIATELY. I look at the photographs of she and I together and I watch the video of me speaking with her on her show and I can't believe I was so fortunate to have had that magical opportunity in my life. At her unbelievable age of 79 this week, it seemed nothing could stop her or my admiration of her. Until I heard this audiobook. This time, her work stabbed me in the heart and dissolved and deflated my image of her and tainted my feelings toward her. In this new audiobook, "I HATE EVERYONE", although she camps it up and says she is being somewhat tongue-in-cheek, Joan unveils a heavily gross, nearly vomited collection of endless, intentionally-alarming barbs towards innocent subjects that she apparently hates... for real. Chuckling about three year-old babies killed by their mothers is now fodder for her newest brand of "humor". Then there's the toilet humor so graphic and over-the-top, it stings to hear her speak about it. I was so shocked and upset by her readings that it became overwhelming; and by that I mean overwhelmingly embarrassing, overwhelmingly weak and completely aimless. There really is no point made. I actually threw each disc away after I heard it. That is very unlike me who keeps everything she does. It was just that bad. To "hate" something like a newborn? Like a grandmother? It usually might work for someone like Joan who can finesse a tight-rope of controversial subjects... but not this time. Her punchlines are so forced and reaching, I cringed with disappointment. Deeply saddened, I even thought, "This will end her career..." And I sure didn't want to feel that way. I feel so sad that this is what she peddles nowadays. I have to say I honestly don't think she even wrote a lot of this material. It is so far from her usual wit and set-up. It doesn't sound like her style at all. Frankly, this sounds a lot like John Waters and Margaret Cho in their grossest, meanest and most vicious rants. I watched Joan promote this material on a few TV shows recently and use some of the jokes from this book and you can almost see the APPLAUSE! sign being lit because the audience is not timed with the joke. For Joan's audience to sound forced and polite, it just isn't right. But the truth is, garbage and toilet humor work with only the most carefully-crafted joke. These things she hates are not presented or framed... they are just dumped on your lap like a dirty diaper as she stands there in maniacal laughter. I will continue to watch "Joan and Melissa - Joan Knows Best?" and I will continue to admire her and support her. I just want to pretend this book never happened and pray her career doesn't suffer from this.
