Title: Cute, and a little frustrating

Review: I think this book is another in a line of those taking off on the hunger games. Not in themes or tone, as this book is pretty light and fluffy and a nice little adventure. No the similarity comes from the narrative style, being written in the present tense to give a sense of immediacy to everything. The issue I have with that is that it can make it hard to follow exactly what's happening when your viewpoint as a reader is narrowed to the point where you can't hear from other characters or even get a description of everything that's in a room except from the angle of the main character's eyeline. This can work in stories, but with a mystery story where you're trying to get the answer before the detective? It's a bit of a bust.

I enjoyed the characters, but not enough to keep reading in this style.

Title: An Indiana Jones style adventure

Review: Ana waits in the lobby of the hotel just outside of Petra in Jordan. Her mother is now fourteen and a half hours late coming to meet her. Never mind that Ana received a telegram telling her that the trip had been cancelled, which she immediately tore up. Ana is determined to catch up with her mom, especially since she also received a mysterious package from before leaving for the airport. So when a sweaty man in a dark shiny suit tracks Ana down at the hotel and tries to send her home, she gives him the slip. What better way than disappearing in the winding streets of the town market. Unfortunately, she isn't able to give Gordy, son of her new nanny, the slip as easily. Tall and gangly, but tenacious, he manages to keep up with her in her mad escape until she has no choice but to let him tag along.

Ana has traveled the world over with her parents and is comfortable navigating the streets of a foreign city as well as the archeological sites where they work. Now she must use that experience to search for her mother among the shrines, tombs and other hand-carved edifices that make up Petra. Despite Gordy's total lack of experience traveling in a foreign land, he proves himself to be intelligent, resourceful and stalwartly loyal as they climb to the hill tops, explore the gloomy interiors of the monuments, and crawl through nooks and crannies in the rock-hewn structures of an ancient civilization.

In this Indiana Jones-style adventure, the two sleuths must solve the encoded message sent by Ana's mom to find her. They soon learn that they must trust no one, for the many characters they encounter are not what they seem. It is a great read. Since it is somewhat long for this age category, I recommend it for advanced middle grade readers.

Review: From my 7-year-old, "This book is the funnest (sic) book ever. It might not look interesting, but it's a super fun adventure." While we'll have to agree to disagree that it doesn't "look fun", I completely agree with her overall assessment of the story. It's been a great read-aloud book. The way it's written, each of us has developed a different theory about who-done-it. It's been exciting and fun to see it unfold. We have also gone down a rabbit hole of exploring Petra (remotely) and learning about the Nabatean people. I never would have even known about this ancient culture to include it in our schooling and now we're reading about them and watching National Geographic videos. Entertaining and inspiring us, this is a great book and a great read for a younger audience.

Title: Love the plot AND characters

Review: I loved the book - great characters and plot. It was surprising that Gordy became a fun and interesting kid rather than the pill he seemed to be in the beginning. Best of all, I never guessed how it would all be tied together; the plot was definitely not predictable. It's wonderful to find a book with a strong girl leader for my nieces. And, I'm very much looking forward to the next book and finding out about her Father.

Title: I loved the cover and the title

Review: I loved the cover and the title. I thought my kids might like this book and got it for them. I read it instead. I thought the characters were well drawn and had interesting backgrounds, including the adults. The setting was also a cool change from other YA books I've read. I liked the Arabic and Nabatean words used throughout the story and learning more about the Middle Eastern customs made for interesting reading. I was reading fast and late at night to find put what happens and should have stopped more often to consult the map at the front of the book so that I could picture the story more clearly. I like that Ana is a strong character, but her tone was a little bit too disrespectful at times for me and the book is a little heavy on the theme of kids knowing better and more than adults. It would have been nice to have one active adult in the story that they could trust. Ana's mom doesn't count since she was sidelined for most of this book and Ana has to save her too! Looking forward to finding Jack Steppe in the next
book!

Title: Not your average mystery book :-)

Review: Living up to it's "mystery like" title, this book keeps you guessing to the very end, and provides room for guessing what will happen next in the series. It's very well written and I think people ages 10+ will enjoy this read, since I am 12 and thoroughly enjoyed it. I read the book in an afternoon, so it's not a long read, which is good for people that enjoy a light read,(it's chapters are usually 7-12ish pages long) and I am certain that people who like a longer read will still enjoy it. The book was slightly forgetable, but still a good read.

The book also has an imformative section in the back where, since in the book it has some Arabic and Nabatean words, it has a list of vocabulary words in those lauanuges so you can follow along, since I'm not sure that people would see the word "Shewf" and think that it would mean "look" in Arabic.

RECOMMENDED READ!!!!!!!!!!!!
