Title: Disappointed. Jesse is evolving into a boring character

Review: I agree with dbs. It is a good book as a stand alone, but if you have been reading Jesse Stone since day one, it has really taken a turn I don’t care for. I don’t even recognize his character anymore and it is so disappointing. Too many changes. The original Jesse as a flawed human with extraordinary professional skills is the one I grew to know and love. I’d prefer to keep reading Jesse Stone novels that focus on a good crime mystery as Parker was so skilled at telling, and leave the moral lectures out as the main theme of the book. I’m reading to be entertained not to be “educated” about society’s problems. I can go somewhere else if that is what I want to read about. Not sure I will continue reading Coleman’s version of Jesse.

Title: Not what I was hoping for

Review: It wasn't that this was a bad book. I enjoyed Coleman's Moe Prager series and hope he writes more, but when I read a book about one of Robert Parker's characters (and Jessie Stone is a favorite), I expect snappy dialogue, humor, and a little sexual innuendo to be mixed with a good mystery that doesn't get too ugly. I had just come off a fairly intense novel, and I was depending on Parker to lighten things up a bit. There was nothing light about this book. The subject was disturbing; some scenes were a little too graphic; and Jessie Stone took himself much too seriously. Also, the ending was a real downer.

Review: Lots of cursing and modern slang is added to this edition, and this takes the place of actual character development. This author (in a series of authors) took the easy way out. No thought is needed to add swearing, thought is needed to continue with character development. This is written in the original author's name, but strips the characters of the original author's intent. I didn't bother to finish this book, even though I"ve read all 17 previous Jesse Stones. It just wasn't worth it. I'm sorry I wasted my money on this. It's almost as though an adolescent boy, with no actual life experience, is the author.

Review: When I started this book it seemed to just another police procedural story of finding the guilty party. But this was more than that it was a story of our times. Now Paradise is a fictional community, but what happens in this story could have happened in any real community in America and probably has or will happen someday. The is no sermon here just a hard look at how this epidemic can happen. Now I don't want to get on my soapbox here and go on about the evils of drug use. I just want to say this was a sad story that doesn't end well for anybody. This is one Jesse Stone story that every fan of them needs to read. This is a new chapter in these tales of law enforcement in Paradise, Massachusetts.

Review: Trigger warnings for drug abuse and death

Robert B. Parker’s series are for the most part, a must read, must buy. This stand-alone is easy to follow but at times difficult to read due to emotions evoked. No editing errors, gratuitous violence or drag-you-down drama.

Compelling storyline of the opioid problem. It did not address why the dealers were deliberately killing their clients with bad drugs. Realistic procedures, actions and reactions. Believable characters with distinct personalities. Thought-provoking and memorable dialogue.

“Recognition is the easy part. Just because you know the truth of things, it’s impossible to snap your fingers and make patterns of behavior disappear. Logic and reason are woeful in the face of deeply ingrained feelings.”

‘Junkies don’t need to search for or ponder the meaning of life. Life is about one thing and one thing only—chasing the next hit. But the cruelest irony was that once you were hooked, the physical hurt of not having it was worse than the pain that made you take it in the first place.’

I will re-read this story and always look for to works in the Robert B. Parker and Reed Farrel Coleman series.

Title: Another Great Jesse Stone Story

Review: The Jesse Stone stories have become more about the characters than the crime. Once again Jesse gets involved in love that can't happen in the end. I much prefer the story line in the books to the one in the movies, although the movies are good stories. I just think that the TV story got lost by Jesse losing his job and floundering around for a while before getting it back. Not a surprise story line, just a sad one. But this book again tells a good story that's worth reading.

Review: I found this not quite up to Coleman's usual standards. Jesse's character seems to have changed, and not for the better. He's too brooding, and seems more unhappy about lost loves (including Johnnie Walker Black) than he is happy about the son who's come into his life. Jesse should lighten up and hang out with Spenser instead of visiting Vinnie Morris.

As other reviewers noted, we can do without the constant references to his alcoholism- we get the fact that he is still a deeply flawed man. The story itself is good and relevant, but at the risk of a spoiler, Coleman goes out of his way to manipulate the reader into viewing one of the central characters differently than they turn out to be. The story can carry itself- we don't need gimmicks.

Review: This one is, as they say, ripped from the headlines. Jesse is dealing with a problem found on the front page of the paper every day. The opioid crisis. The story moves along quickly, not as much Jesse action, but still a great read. Coleman writes in Parker's voice and I devoured this in one sitting. Can't wait for the next one.
