Review: It is true, as has been stated in previous reviews, that there isn't a clear pronunciation guide in the beginning of the book. That said, if you listen to the CD while following along in the book you'll find that it will come to you rather easily. German pronunciation, unlike French, is very straightforward and you'll have it down just fine if you stick with this course for even five of the 30 lessons.This course is one of those which, like Hugo's German in Three Months, gives you a nice solid foundation with more than just basic vocabulary in one short relatively short book. The Hugo course, while excellent and featuring a pronunciation guide along with three CDs instead of this course's one, is a bit more dry.This course is one I'm quick to recommend because it's full of lighthearted fun without going overboard and without losing its focus. The thirty lessons follow the adventures of a young Japanese woman who is stays in Germany for a few months and deals with everything from getting a job to getting sick to attending a wedding to winning some cash in the lottery and a lot in between.The amount of knowledge this book offers compared to its price makes it right up there with the best values I've ever seen for a low-priced language course, and believe me when I say that if you're new to learning languages and dive straight into a course which costs several hundred dollars such as the first levels of Pimsleur or Rosetta Stone, in all likelihood you're making a huge mistake. Not only does this course give you more vocabulary than either one of those, but you can try it out first at a much lower cost to make sure you'll be able and willing to stick it out. I've long ago lost count of the number of Rosetta Stone courses I've seen at garage sales.If you truly feel you need a detailed pronunciation guide before starting out, get the Hugo course, which is also excellent. However, if you have reason to believe you have aptitude towards languages, especially one with much more straightforward pronunciation than English has, I believe you can dive into this without one and pick up what you need on the fly - which is how you learned your first language to begin with. Berlitz has been around a long time and they know what they're doing. This course, for what it costs and what it offers, is great.

Review: 1. There's no basic pronunciation and alphabet lesson - at all - anywhere - especially not on the CD.2. The pronunciation guide is about 4 sentences long, and again there is no audio accompanyment.3. All that's on the CD are the mini conversations at the begining of each of the 30 lessons - one at normal pace and once at a slow pace.4. Lessons include many words that are not introduced through the audio conversations, and absolutely no pronunciation guidance is given.5. It's actually fairly riduculously set up - no one can learn a language in 30 lessons that take a max. of 5 minutes each (or about 2.5 hours total), especially when spread over 30 days and with little review.Basically this is a crappy way to learn German - or to speak and audibly comprehend it. You might come out reading a little. So save your $20ish and buy some weinerschnitzel instead.
