Title: Disappointed; Linda Taylor’s story was far more riveting in a piece by Slate

Review: It’s astounding that the author is an editor for Slate. They did a piece that had the meat & fascinating information that I hoped would have been expanded upon here. Nope. Not so much. This book could easily be 200 pages shorter. While Linda Taylor’s story was one that’s had me hooked, unfortunately, I came away disappointed in this book as a whole.

The author appears to minimize Linda Taylor’s crimes & attempts to position her to garner some degree of sympathy. That was an utter joke—especially if you’ve done any reading on this woman. of the low amount the state of Illinois was ultimately able to prove, in addition to basically having a rough life. I bought this book solely for Linda Taylor’s story. I know much of it so I assumed there would be Ronald Reagan mentions... I didn’t expect to find myself sifting through the seemingly endless stories about how often Reagan told some version of said story. It was irritating, repetitive and hey, to put it in a way the author is likely to understand: it was as irritating & repetitive as the same story being told by Reagan himself. The author even manages to delve in to an overly long history of Reagan’s election which is just dull, dull, dull.

Slate had an article back in 2013 about the ‘real story’ of Chicago’s ‘Welfare Queen.’ I must say, that story was absolutely fantastic in writing, flow & true crime. This book, unfortunately does not have nearly the flow. The author basically begins with much of what’s known, then backtracks in to politics, the backtracks to Linda’s early life & more or less implies that there’s some justification for this woman being the way she was. It’s a story we’ve heard about a million times: her family didn’t love her; she was an outcast; she grew up colored in the segregated south; she didn’t have a chance because her family life/coloured/everything.

That’s sad, yet so many people have & had far harder lives than Linda Taylor. They don’t turn to potential murder, they don’t become criminals, they see life has dealt them a bad deal & keep doing their best—even with the odds stacked against them. Of course it’s worth noting these odds are likely to have improved had she not spent her time scheming about how to sue people, lying about her child being injured, lying about everything, claiming she was a doctor & screwing people over, you know... like your typical sociopath & psychopath with boarderline personality disorder. She tried to steal a murdered woman’s house for godssake!

Linda’s son Johnnie suffered at the hands of his mother & I know her was in/out of prison. All the same, he appears to have a sense of decency that wasn’t found in Linda Taylor, well... ever. The political and the biographical information feel like I’m reading two different books. I’ll be blunt: I was in the mood for a good true crime read today. As this is one of the historic topics that fascinates me, I was super excited when I saw the cover.

Unfortunately, I’ve finished 70% & I’m no longer excited. I suppose I’ll finish it, but I’m actually debating whether to return my copy. If you want to read about this in the context of yet another political ideology about how welfare reform was wrong &/or oversimplified by some, you’ll probably love this. I love intellectual reads, but after a string of them, I was hoping for a good, solid, true crime story minus all of the admonishing tone the author can’t help but interject. Ultimately, this one turned out to be a bummer. It’s simply too disjointed, slow & the obvious angle makes for a tedious read.

I will not discourage anyone from reading it as I believe the book has value & some, especially if they don’t know the story, likely will enjoy is significantly. I just don’t happen to be as satisfied as I would have been with a different approach.

Title: A Sad Life Altogether

Review: If you grew up in the US in the 1970s, you may remember Ronald Reagan’s first run for the presidency in 1976, during which he frequently referred to a “welfare queen” living in Chicago, who gamed the system such that she had numerous houses, cars, fur coats, etc., etc., all the proceeds of fraud on the federal welfare system. Well, “The Queen” is that woman’s story - going by the name Linda Taylor, she actually had some 10 or 12 aliases, not to mention numerous birth dates, parents, children, husbands, living situations and races. In reality, she was born in 1926 in the US South, the product of a white woman and black man (whose sexual union was literally illegal at the time). Because of her mixed race, her family largely rejected her, and she grew up all over the southern part of the country, with various family and non-family members and very little (if any) education. Her life of crime began long before the 1970s, when she was identified and prosecuted as a welfare cheat, charges that eventually led to her incarceration for a little over two years; but she may also have been a kidnapper, a bigamist, an “ordinary” thief (of other peoples’ property) and, not least, a murderer. Journalist Josh Levin has waded through thousands of documents, all meticulously laid out in the notes and bibliography sections of this book - indeed, in my Kindle edition I discovered that I still had some 20% of the book left to read when the story was done, that last 20% of the volume being devoted to sources and thank-yous. A really fascinating tale, rather heartbreaking when you think about this woman’s life, utterly impoverished in terms of human contact, love and acceptance - no wonder she felt entitled to take what she wanted, as she’d been deprived of so much. Recommended.

Review: The author admits this woman is a crook. Stole money her whole life and is suspected of at least one murder. But his sympathy lies with the criminal. What kind of human feels that way? Don’t bother reading it, it’s another “ blame the victims “ book.
