Review: I have worked in the restaurant industry my entire life, and I have to say that even if you've only waited tables for a month, or never worked in the industry at all, this is a must read. When people go out to dinner, they have a pleasant time, or they don't. They like their waiter, or they don't. They have strong opinions on the food, the smells, the décor, or they don't. Regardless of peoples experience in a dining room, there is a circus act going on continuously long before these people ever arrived, and it was in full effect when their order was placed, and it will continue after they have paid their bill and left. If you've ever wondered what the circus in the back of the house is like, then pick up this book.

Title: The Book that Made Anthony Bourdain Holds Up Very Well

Review: “Kitchen Confidential" is the book that made Anthony Bourdain and, after two decades, it holds up extremely well. Bourdian offers insights on what happens in the kitchen and what drove him to become a chef. He presents am engaging and sometimes funny look at his early experiences with restaurants, their owners, staffs and even takes readers behind the scenes with his own life. This is a very different Bourdian than the one who pops up on CNN these days, far less mature and worldly and more profane. Regardless, fans will appreciate “Kitchen Confidential” and Bourdian’s writing--easily one of the strengths that has kept him on TV for most of the last decade and a half--helps move readers along and offers a memorable impression. Highly recommended.

Title: Truth

Review: Anthony Bourdain tells us early in the book that he is going to tell the truth - and he does. The good, the bad and the beautiful. It was poignant to read this the day he died by suicide. I felt like I had him here in my room as he talked to me. He writes the same way that he talks, so it is easy to hear his voice in your ear as you read. If you have ever worked in restaurants, as I have, you will recognize a lot of what he talks about. But some of it is just Bourdain's restaurants. He tends to gather his crews from a pool of sociopaths, junkies, inveterate alcoholics and just marginally sane people. They are never late, never call in sick and are loyal to him to the end. I learned about lots of wonderful food I had never tasted. I was constantly looking up these exotic items in the dictionary. He teaches as he tells his story. What's not to like about this book?

Title: Kitchen Confidential - A true collectors item

Review: Although the book flew over many countries (not due to seller btw ... but due to customs that don't know what they are doing...) it arrived safely at my house. The book is in pristine condition and seems to have an authentic signature from Bourdain himself. Came as stated it was and I'm super happy.

The book itself is a terrific read and I can also highly recommend the audiobook, which is narrated by Bourdain himself.

Highly recommend the book as well as the seller

Title: A Map through the Landmines

Review: When my wife first started attending cooking school, this book was all the rage. Anthony Bourdain is the Hunter Thompson of food. He is irascible on the line, poignant in reflection and articulate with a pen. The way he speaks in his television shows is the way he writes, with cleverness, accuracy and meaning. Everything that can be said about this book and his career has already been said except this, looking back at his career is to witness a modern low point in culinary history.

He described an age where most everything was done wrong (Mafia run restaurants, ego invested cuisine, rampant drug abuse) and because of it we have learned how not to repeat those mistakes. His legacy is not merely one of celebrity success, that is almost completely random and can happen to anyone. His legacy is a map through the landmines, a way to avoid all the worst of what has plagued a necessary and desired part of our economy and our culture. The restaurant business will be forever measured against the sins of its past and through this mirror they will build a better future.

Title: Great book if you're looking for a peek into the chaotic mind of a chef

Review: I worked in a kitchen for a few years in high school and college. Nothing fancy, just a hand-me-down restaurant that had once been "mom and pop" and served decent enough food. It was my first real job, and fifteen years later, now in a completely unrelated field, I can still look back on those days with a mixture of fondness and abject terror. The kitchen is just as obscene as Bourdain details it here. I often wonder where I would have ended up had I stayed with cooking. It started as a job but I grew a great appreciation for it. Friends and I would talk about how we'd do things differently if we owned the restaurant. Not knowing how that would have ended, it was a great journey to live vicariously through Tony. His writing style and ability to tell stories really captivated me. For those that have never worked in a kitchen, it's a good primer. For those that have, you'll feel right at home.

Title: I could hear his voice

Review: Wow! This is a no holds barred, personal narrative of Bourdain's early experiences in the kitchen. Having traveled around the world I was able to relate to a lot of his comments about kitchens, what to eat, what not to eat and when. I reveled in the language that is erudite, crude but immersive. I loved his show and I could hear his voice as I read this book. I will read this again in a few months and I know it will continue to be revelatory. I was sorry to hear of his death as I was reading this book. His voice and observations were powerful, complex and emotional on his television series. It is the same in this book.

Review: I listened to this on Audible because I really wanted to hear it told in Tony's voice, especially now that he's gone. The book was everything I hoped for and more. Bourdain was a genius, and a gifted storyteller as well. For anyone interested in the food industry, restaurants, cooking, becoming a chef, or just eating, I would recommend this book, and I'd recommend you hear it rather than read it. If you're at all a fan of No Reservations or Parts Unknown, it will feel similar to that, with more detail.
