What might happen if a year before Netherfield was let, Mr Bennet had an epiphany and started to take an interest in his family.
Could he have curbed the excesses of his wife and younger daughters?
What impressions would the Bennet family have made on the inhabitants of Netherfield Park?
Would it have made a difference to the interactions between his family and the visitors from London and more importantly, Derbyshire?
Find out in this gentle story about a family finding a new path to happiness, as the ripples of Mr Bennetโs change spread to the rest of his family.
I love the new character of Bingley's Aunt Mathilda. She's priceless, and oh so wonderful in her handling of her niece, Caroline. The usual villains make appearances, but because Mr Bennett is now a decent father and husband, the bad guys are disposed of much more quickly and neatly. It's nice to have a Jane Bennett with slightly more backbone, the three youngest Bennett girls with more sense and less annoying behavior, and a Mrs Bennett who isn't so cartoonishly weird. Darcy is romantic and swoon worthy, and Bingley starts to grow up a little.
The book is well written and well edited. I recommend it highly. It's great fun.

Title: A delightful "What if ...?" for Mr. Bennet

Review: The word that comes to mind to describe this P&P variant is "mellow". Quite often low-angst variants can be so sweetly charming that it becomes like a surfeit of cotton candy. Not this one, fortunately - there's bite and wit in the dialogue, and just enough vinegar from the usual villains (plus an unexpected one) to keep the multiple HEAs balanced.
There's enjoyable bits of humor scattered throughout, along with just a touch of pathos for a couple of characters who have earned it.
Mrs. Bennet's character was well-handled, as were her relationships with her husband and daughters. Lydia remains energetic, but her vulgarity is finally controlled as she matures. I could easily envision the situation where she comes to the rescue of someone being bullied - it would be completely within character and deserves a "Brava, Lydia!"
The romance and HEA of ODC is very satisfying. Loved how Elizabeth can not only beat "Uncle Reggie" at chess, but also Darcy. The epilogue wraps everything and everyone up quite nicely. A very well-crafted, and enjoyable JAFF - recommended for all P&P fans.
