Review: My favorite computer book. It has sentimental value for me along with AWK manual. I have been buying a hard copy of every version since 2007, and reading to refresh my Perl version. My job requires a lot of text/string manipulation of DNA and RNA sequences. I did not have any formal programming education. Once I learned how to run a single AWK command on terminal, i was able to learn a lot of Perl from this book and Perl documentation. i appreciate the efforts authors put into it. I looked for a Python version of this book. There is nothing close to it. My suggestion to the authors, they should consider writing one for Python. It would be a hit! Most beginners or intermediate Python books are too dry and not engaging. It's like reading reference manual. Maybe it's the difference in that nature of language. Perl is way more fun than Python to write in.

Review: I bought first edition of this book, probably not on Amazon but somewhere else. And then another one. As a starter it is the best you can get. You will learn about simple and compound variables, files and most importantly: Regular expressions. I used Perl so many times in my jobs in past that now I am a little bit sorry that its popularity takes a dip. My managers depended on me to parse files for them and give them values and statistics they needed. I automated many jobs using Perl on Linux. You can also easily access and manipulate Excel spreadsheets by using Perl, start from data and end with Excel graphs. Also appreciated by management. Even Git was written in C, Perl, Tcl among other languages.
OK, returning to this book, if you want to start with Perl this is the book to buy first.
