Stop Walking on Eggshells: Coping When Someone You Care About Has Borderline Personality Disorder is a self-help guide that helps the family members and friends of individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) understand this self-destructive disorder and learn what they can do to cope with it and take care of themselves. It is designed to help them understand how the disorder affects their loved ones and recognize what they can do to get off the emotional roller coasters and take care of themselves.

If you are in an abusive relationship which you know is bad, but can't figure out what to do about it or how to get out, this book is for you. If your child or sibling is in an unhealthy relationship and cannot seem to get out, this book may help you to understand why and what to do about it. (Unfortunately, if you are on the outside, there is not a lot you can do). The book gives useful information and coping strategies for people in chosen relationships (e.g., marriage or friendship) as well as unchosen relationships (family or work). It is a useful read for anyone, but a very POWERFUL read for those caught up in the whirlwind of someone who suffers from BPD. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Review: Stop Walking On Eggshells - "taking your life back when someone you care about has borderline personality disorder" is a relatively easy-to-read book that can be a great help to anyone trapped in that situation.

The first part of the book helps the reader understand the chaotic, irrational, turbulent inner world of the BDP. The authors have given just the right amount of info. Many other books on this subject are simply too technical.

Though many people living with BPs are well aware of their own suffering, some non-BPs may be in denial or blaming something else for their problems. Chapter 4 on how BP behaviour affects non-BPs is especially helpful in identifying the root of the problems that many non-BPs face.

Part 2 - Taking back control of your life is what distinguishes this book from the rest. Especially useful are chapters on setting boundaries and asserting your needs with confidence and clarity. Though all the tips and advice may not work all the time, they are practical and realistic. The authors seem to be rather optimistic that you can live with someone with BP by adjusting yourself to them. I'm not sure whether this is true or within the powers of a mere mortal.

The reality on the ground is that most non-BPs in the online support groups have thrown in the towel and given up on their BP partners. Probably that's why the authors have only devoted a few pages to the subject of treatment and recovery.

Title: Great book for someone who has been hurt by someone with BPD
Date: Reviewed in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ on February 18, 2009
Review: I'm not at all any kind of expert on the subject of Borderline Personality Disorder, I'm just someone who has discussed extensively with my therapist how my mother in law has hurt me. After several discussions with him about viscious things she has said about me, the way she has behaved towards me, and her constant flip flop view of me, he suggested I read this book. It has been a huge eye opener. I would never say to her face that I suspect she has this disorder, god forbid what she would say to me then. I have suffered tremendously at many of the things she has said about me, and struggled with wondering if she is right. This book really helps calm those fears and gives me some insight as to why I am sometimes "great, amazing awesome, she loves me" and other times "ungrateful, selfish, a liar." This book is not difficult to read for someone who is, like me, not at all in the medical field, just a daughter who is constantly trying to please and constantly failing. I recommend this book to anyone who has someone in their life who may have BPD. In reading it it has brought up some old hurt feelings, but it has helped me to work through these feelings rather than leave them buried. Great book, and I highly recommend it.

Title: So relatable!

Review: My wife (now ex) suffers from this condition and there was endless content in this book that I could relate to. My therapist loaned me her book, but I made so many notes and underlined so many passages that I had to buy a new one to give back to her! It was so helpful for me to understand why certain events were happening in our marriage and allowed me to mentally process everything without continually questioning myself. If I could personally thank the authors for bringing some peace into my life, I certainly would.
