Title: Compassionate Capitalism

Review: In the interest of disclosure Phil was my professor, mentor, and then colleague at Northwestern University. Having now read the book twice, something I could never do with an ordinary economics book, and having read other reviews about the magnitude of the challenges, I am prompted to now engage on a micro level. Washington has given us the “best government money can buy” but not at my local level. A city nearby has raised public employee minimum wages to $12.50 and I need to reach out and praise them for a good start. A next step is to award contracts on the same basis.
I need to tell my local Wal-Mart manager that paying such low wages creates an environment of surly workers that ruins my shopping experience. Instead I go to Publix where employees are also shareholders and can afford to shop where they work. Publix understands the value of a lifetime customer.
Phil has reminded me that the challenges are daunting, the solutions on a macro level difficult, but actions where I am closest to the businesses and elected officials are not so tough. Many of Phil’s positions and solutions apply equally, albeit on a smaller scale, to what can be done locally. I hope this does not come off as overly simple but I am compelled to act.

Title: Indicting Capitalism

Review: In ‘Confronting Capitalism’, the Master Marketer has aggregated many facts and figures that present quite an indictment of many aspects of capitalism that most of us in the Western world have held dear. In fact, the USA is presented as quite a scary place to live. Whether we talk the right to bear arms (the urgent need for gun laws), the paucity of retirement funds, poverty levels, racial discrimination, non-maintenance of infrastructure, poor business governance, self-interest driven politicians, weak education system, household and government indebtedness and other matters, we are left with the view that there is a better road to travel in life. I’m afraid that the solutions do not readily jump off the pages. I am left wondering if democracy itself is at risk.
As one might expect, the book is well-written and as easy to follow as a fireside chat.

Review: Critics of capitalism are many. Most are long on whining about the evils of the system but short on suggesting effective solutions. Here comes highly qualified Philip Kotler and presents 14 major problems of capitalism. He does this without droning on, and with easy to follow and clearly understandable concepts and language – no jargon, no equations. Most refreshingly, he also identifies possible solutions to each of the 14 problems. This compact and focused book can serve as a handbook for starting a long overdue conversation about who we are, what we aim for, and how we can overcome the shortcomings of the system that is supposed to bring about the economic well-being of all our population, but often fails to do so. Reflective of its author, it is a hopeful and uplifting book not only for Americans, but people around the globe who face or will be facing these same problems. With this clear guide we can cut through the complexities and all participate in the discussion.

Title: Not just pointing out flaws

Review: Kotler's book is not an anti-capitalist screed or polemic. This is an accessible summary of the flaws that have crept into modern capitalism and threaten to upend it.

While many books that follow this line suggest that capitalism ought to be done away with it severely restrained, Philip Kotler offers 14 specific ways that our economic system needs help and ends as an unabashed fan who believes capitalism has done more good than harm, but, and it's a big but, time is not on our side.

Title: Worst business / economics book ever

Review: This is about the worst business, economics, finance books I have ever read. And I say this as a Finance MBA from the Kellogg School where Professor Kotler teaches. I did not have him in any class, but I certainly saw him around in the hallways and parking lot. Nevertheless, this book is about the most vacuous and banal book on these topics I have ever read. It is supposed to be a critique of capitalism, but he spends much of the book describing government corruption in Africa and corruption in the US and leaves it at that as though that is some indictment of capitalism. Then when it comes to recommended solutions he suggests we find CEOs who are more civic minded. Or he suggests as a solution we should have better regulations. Well, duh! as my daughter would say.

His descriptions are obvious and un-insightful. His analysis is simplistic. His recommendations are at the very best naive to the point of being pointless. He also makes some incredibly partisan statements that the fault of pretty much everything is on the Republicans without any criticism of Democrats.

The book is also very lazy in its research. He quotes broad statistics that one could find in TIME magazine and doesn't offer anything new or insightful. When there are so many good financial writers out there such as Michael Lewis and David Stockman, this book falls way below the mark.

Review: Finally a book that bridges the divide between hard line right and left combatants.
Kotler understands why the nation is divided. Unregulated capitalism will eventually lead to
its own destruction unless it takes into greater account the plight of the losers in this Darwinian battle for survival.
Smarter, more thoughtful historians and economists, have to gain more political power to reverse what happens
to oligarchical nations that can't see the gathering storm of dangerous discontent.
It should be required reading for everyone elected or desiring to be an elected official.
The time has come for scholars like Kotler to cool down the rhetoric and expose the dangers that lie along the road we are traveling.
Great job.
