Our greatest African American poet’s award-winning first novel, about a black boy’s coming-of-age in a largely white Kansas town

When first published in 1930, Not Without Laughter established Langston Hughes as not only a brilliant poet and leading light of the Harlem Renaissance but also a gifted novelist. In telling the story of Sandy Rogers, a young African American boy in small-town Kansas, and of his familyβ€”his mother, Annjee, a housekeeper for a wealthy white family; his irresponsible father, Jimboy, who plays the guitar and travels the count

Title: Coming of Age - but Gracefully
Date: Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2017
Review: This is the first Langston Hughes novel I've read and for a hero of mine, poetically, he didn't disappoint with prose. NOT WITHOUT LAUGHTER is a coming of age novel about a boy named Sandy and the colorful cast of characters that surround him while he grows into a young man. There's his no 'count father, Jimboy; his silly and gullible mother, Anjee; his wild and free aunt, Harriet; his staunch and starched aunt Tempy; and last but not least, his grandmother who ironically in the novel is called Aunt Hagar. Each has a quirk which makes for a plot and a prop to bring Sandy further along to manhood. The reading is easy, relaxed and authentic. And the topics covered are controversial. But Langston paints a proper picture of the time period and lays a foundation for who the reader will ultimately see in Sandy. The only thing I disliked about the novel was at times, it just felt like I was watching a normal life go by. Not drab, mind you, but not a lot of action. Good dialogue, I guess, but maybe not enough tension. I'm not saying I wanted to see explosions and car chases--because this wasn't an action and adventure novel--I would have liked to see more tension. Like when Harriet came home late, we see the mother's switch but not the argument or the beating itself even. There were more instances but I don't want to put out spoilers.

If you like Langston Hughes' voice, you'll love NOT WITHOUT LAUGHTER. Just don't expect any heated climaxes.

Title: Growing up Black in Kansas
Date: Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2015
Review: Langston Hughes is best known for his poetry and as an important figure in the Harlem Renaissance, but his semi-autobiographical novel about a boy growing up in Stanton (Lawrence) Kansas is an important account of life in the segregated north in the early 20th century. Rather than write a memoir about his own more affluent and educated family, Hughes surrounds Sandy with types: his washer-woman grandmother, Aunt Hagar, his mother Angee, maid to the severe Mrs. RIce and his father, the roaming, musical Jimboy, his aunt Harriet who becomes a somewhat successful blues singer, and aunt Tempy who has deserted her family for life imitating the white middle class. The book moves forward as Sandy questions and begins to understand the life around him, but it is more a series of set scenes than a fully-realized novel, with chapters on the many aspects of life: the carnival, church, school. I have taught this book to Kansas college students who had no idea that such conditions existed outside the South (if they even thought about segregation at all). Hughes is a terrific writer. The chapter "Dance" is Hughes at this poetic best, creating with words the jazz world he loved.

Title: A Book to Source and Keep!
Date: Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2015
Review: This book is in essence 'unwritten black history'; the inconvenient truth that requires scratching the surface of American acceptability to reveal the basis of its unacceptable past practices. Fiction might be its category but any reader would detect the non-fiction of the story - i.e. the author's youth. I will write no spoilers here but whether black or white, it is a book well worth reading as it gives clarity to what is generally suspected but not admitted. At the same time in the context of fictional recount, the book enables the reader to enjoy the storyline without necessitating judgment of the time period in which it is set. Mr. Langston Hughes incorporates poetic descriptions throughout his prose that paint pictures of landscapes and events that despite being foreign to the reader, makes the reader feel present and familiar with the life and lifestyle of its characters. I stand by its highest recommendation to anyone wishing to broaden their library, in particular, on black literature.

Title: Langston Hughes Also Writes Novels
Date: Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2020
Review: I loved this book. It is one that you miss reading when done. The characters are so real and so filled with real-life experience.., an African American family in the late 30's to early 40's. The interaction between family members, between community members and within their lives seems so real, so important and at times, so heart breaking. Yet the book overall is also optimistic.

Title: A fabulous coming of age novel - with a young, black, probaby queer, point of view
Date: Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2010
Review: The Lesbian and Gay book discussion group at the NYC LGBT Center read this book in Feb 2010.

I enjoyed the book and thought that everyone else would, too. It's a great coming of age story, but I was amazed at how much we found to discuss: the characters (although there was some complaint that they are a bit flat and unchanging - other than the narrator), the position of Blacks in 1920 Kansas and today, the role of music, the prominent place that the church played in the Black community, the perception of light-colored Blacks versus darker colored Blacks, Black history in the US, and how the middle-class Blacks looked down on the lower-class Blacks. We thought that young people might enjoy reading this novel - it's seemingly written for a "young adult" audience -- but some of the matter-of-fact discussion of prostitution and sex may get it banned from conservative schools.

Some thought that the novel ended a bit quickly and brightly -- pointing toward the best (but perhaps unrealistic) future for the young narrator. There are so many tragedies and sad events throughout the novel, it's hard to believe that they'll all be overcome so quickly.

I assumed that Langston Hughes was gay, but there may be some doubt about that classification (It's in the Wikipedia - so it must be true.) He never joined the Communist Party, and while he wrote some homoerotic poetry and a couple of short stories with characters we would today call "gay," Hughes never presented himself as gay. The narrator of "Not Without Laughter" is young, but we identified him as a queer in early 20th Century America.

It's a great book club selection - for gay or straight, Black or white, youngish or older readers.

Title: Love this book
Date: Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2021
Review: I have read this book several times since I bought it, and it never gets old. I love all the relationships, but Sandy and Aunt Hagar are by far my favorite characters. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about African American life after slavery. The best
parts to me was how the characters showed that even in deep poverty, there was always something to laugh about.
