Title: This book will wear you out

Review: A couple of years ago I began reading biographies of painters whose work I admired. For the most part I have enjoyed every biography I read, some, obviously, more than others. For instance, "N. C. Wyeth, A Biography" by David Michaelis, "Edward Hopper, An Intimate Biography" by Gail Levin, and "George Bellows, Painter of America" by Charles H. Morgan are all examples of what I consider a well written biography. They tell me the origins of the painter, where he lived and who he associated with, where a particular piece was painted and what else he might have been interested in during various phases of his life. This book, Grant Wood a Life by R. Tripp Evans glosses over those details in favor of a Sigmund Freud like micro dive into the hidden meaning, mostly sexual, of every brushstroke in a painting. I was ready to quit reading the book half way through the first chapter but have always tried to finish every book I begin, no matter how tedious it is to read. And this book is extremely tedious. As a painter myself, I simply do not believe that every aspect in a painting has some deep hidden meaning. As I read this book, I was reminded of the writer, Flannery O' Conner, confronting a critic who ascribed a deep hidden meaning to the fact that many of the men in one of her stories wore black hats. Miss O'Conner said that in her part of Georgia most of the men wear black hats. That is why the men in the story wore black hats. Sometimes the explanation really is that simple. I'm sure there more satisfying biographies of Grant Wood than this. Do yourself a favor and find one of those. The only reason I didn't give it 1 star is because the author was able to get it published so that should be worth something.

Title: An amazing work of insight into an artist

Review: As a big fan of Grant's work and an artist myself I have always been interested in and searched for what inspires artists and how that influences their work. When I mention Grant to people they often look blank until you say "The painting of the man and woman with a pitchfork" and then all becomes clear. Evan's with his new book about Grant opens up a whole world of Grant and not only what influenced this man to produce an amazing piece of history in his painting "American Gothic" but a side of Grant we have never been able to know about as a man. In the past searching for information about Grant Wood I was never able to find anything that really felt more than superficial and at a distance about Grant Wood the man. This is the book that finally fills in all the gaps with not only heart but a true love for Grant Wood. If you have ever wondered what makes an artist and artist and how his life influences what he or she produces then this book will amaze you. Even if you have ever thought you were not a big fan of artists and art I think this book will move you just to understand the story of a man and his internal struggle to be himself and how he expressed that in his art.

Review: This book does an excellent job of tracing Wood's artistic and personal development through his artwork. I'm not sure I fully buy all of Evans' interpretations of Wood's paintings, but I appreciate the clear and nuanced dissection of previous interpretations which were too simplistic and avoided any mention of Wood's same-sex attractions. I appreciate Wood so much more now.

Review: After seeing the 2018 Grant Wood exhibit at he Whitney Museum, I wanted to learn more about this most American of artists. This biography is a engaging and readable book that delivers a complete view of the North American Art movement in the early part of the 20th Century. Most fascinating for me was the story of American masculinity and how that influences the history of homosexuality in US culture.
