The Steinsaltz Tehillim (Hebrew and English Edition) by Adin Steinsaltz Book Review

Title: Brilliant translation but the typeset is quite small

Review: I would buy it again in spite of the typeset because the translation is so accessible. I would have preferred a larger book with a bigger font. The Hebrew is on the right side of the page, the English on the left, linear style. The bottom 1/3 of the page has a second English translation that fills in the spaces between the words to create a fuller picture of the meaning of the text. It does not change the meaning, it clarifies using the actual words (in darker text) and lighter text for the expansion. Not all lines are expanded upon, only those that may benefit from it. Each Psalm has a short heading explanation of the purpose of the Psalm, occasionally another Psalm is referenced, as are the "twin" Psalms 112 and 113. There are books with much more detail about each stanza, but I am happy with this one.

Review: I found this book of Psalms plus commentary to be somewhat disappointing. I have been content praying the Jewish Publication Society's Psalms for almost 25 years. Some of the translations in the Steinsaltz edition are worded in a weird way that does not always sound elegant in English. But it is the lack of a scholarly commentary that is my chief pet peeve with this edition. The English translation is provided, and beneath it, the commentary, oftentimes simply repeating verbatim from the Psalm. It rarely strays into the deeper kabbalistic meaning of the Psalms nor is there any explanation why certain God Names are used. I admire Steinsaltz, but I was rather disappointed with this edition.

Title: Simple the BEST!

Review: I LOVE this Tehillim! The translation is stunningly beautiful and poetic. The commentary is filled with priceless wisdom. It also has prayers at the end such as the Bedtime Shema and Travelers Prayer and more. The quality of the book itself is superb. Binding is excellent and paper is outstanding. This has just become my favorite Tehillim.
