Racial identity, pop culture, and delusions of perfection collide in an eye-opening and refreshingly frank memoir by fashion and beauty insider Danielle Prescod.

Danielle Prescod grew up Black in an elite and overwhelmingly white community, her identity made more invisible by the whitewashed movies, television, magazines, and books she and her classmates voraciously consumed. Danielle took her cue from the world around her and aspired to shrink her identity into that box, setting increasingly poisonous goals. She started painful and damaging chemical hair treatments in elementary school, began depriving herse

Title: Brutally Honest Memoir
Date: Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2023
Review: This brutally honest memoir by Danielle Prescod was an unexpected read for me. I don't read memoirs. I liked the style of writing and did not expect how honest the words would flow. I found myself wondering why hair styles and fashion are such a major part of growing up. I still would rock my Spice Girls t-shirt if I had it. The painful task of getting hair done to look a certain way angered me. Why do we as women feel we need to adjust our natural beauty for others? I felt that Danielle was heading the same way, but I didn't find that. Being honest about our own mean spirit isn't easy, but she did it in Token Black Girl and addressed all the things she felt was wrong and how she kept going. Dieting, fashion, white supremacy, being a girl. It's all here, and this was a great read.

Title: Maybe the question most people need answered first is What is Racism?
Date: Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2023
Review: The more memoirs I read, the more I understand the idea that we can not tell other people what they have experienced or are experiencing. This is made even more clear by "Token Black Girl." Her life, and how she experienced racism is valid, however, I bet a lot of people would say it isn't because she grew up upper-middle class, never having to worry about where her next meal was coming from, or about how she was going to get an education, or work. Still, when she explains her life, you can see how she faced discrimination at almost every turn.

This book can be separated in half. The first half, I can understand. Her childhood was similar to mine in that we both went to private Catholic school, and lived an upbringing that didn't leave us needing much more than what we had. Her classroom was similar to mine as well, mostly white. Did we treat the girls of other races like Danielle was treated? Were we inadvertently discriminatory? I hope not, but maybe thinking about it isn't such a bad thing.

The second half of the book is all about Danielle's work life in the fashion industry. Obviously this is not one I relate to at all, but I do know the names and see the types of things she explains have deep roots in racism. I think she takes some of it a little far, but again, that's her experience, and I can't invalidate that.

If you are of the opinion that racism is an individual problem and nothing is going to change your mind, then don't read this book. It will just make you angry at the author for no reason. But, if you want to at least think about something that we see plaguing the world then I recommend this. It is well written and easy to read.

Review: This book was stunning. At first, I wasn’t quite a fan of the authors behavior and obviously privileged perspective, however she can’t help how she was. The important thing is she really became WOKE to a very high degree.

I could relate to her struggles and realizations about being black and covers a good number of issues and topics under this racially charged identity.

I found myself laughing, nodding in agreement, angry, sad, frustrated and just relating directly and indirectly to her experiences. Her experiences really reflect our experiences as Black women.

I would imagine this book to be helpful to anyone willing to learn and examine other, maybe unpopular, sociological topics, racism in real life and reflect on one’s own opinions, perceptions and beliefs.

I felt moved to screenshot passages and share with likeminded people. Mostly, I found myself wanting to read it again which is unusual for me. I haven’t because I have loads of books to read and exciting stuff to explore.

It’s been awhile since I read the book but I kept it because I felt impelled to write a review even with a long interval since reading it.

Wish it was fresher on my mind but the point is, I loved it. I learned just how toxic fashion is and inherently racist in its current form. The impact of stereotypes, discrimination, racism, marginalization on a persons self esteem, confidence, body image, mental health and potentially anything is painfully powerful. This book will hopefully help change the narrative for our Black girls especially here in the USA. Also hope it will encourage others in the position to help foster a healthy relationship for these girls early on can help reduce the disparities. This can ultimately help equalize all kids, no matter there race/ethnicity to have the same opportunities to grow, be successful and have self confidence to reach their potential.

Okay I’m done preaching Dr King but point is, very informative autobiography and great witnessing this significant transformation in the authors life.

Review: I learned things I have never had the courage to ask. I examined myself and had some Oof moments and some yeah I can agree. I am also saddened by the things that ensnared the author but glad to hear a healing from them and a boldness to share them My lens I hope has been changed for the better or at least I can offer a commitment to put my hearts desire into action in the ways I can.

Title: Thought Provoking

Review: This was really interesting. I was peripherally aware that representation impacts children, especially young girls, but I did not understand the roots of white supremacy that causes lack of representation and how cyclical the reinforcement is. I’ve never been into the fashion industry and again, I was vaguely aware of the media leaning white, but I didn’t realize how impacted even I am to what rich white people think women should look like. We all think we’re getting better, but it’s disheartening to hear the high-ups are still as rooted in racism as they ever were.
