First of all, here is a question.
"Why Japanese comedians reached the top of the mountain of comedy culture?"
You might doubt or deny this idea, but all Japanese including me believe that this is definitely true.
Let me explain the reasons below.
Japan has a very long history of comedy culture, over 200 years.
Japanese people might be thought as shy and square citizens, but the truth is that love for comedy takes root in Japanese culture so deeply.
Japanese comedy market is composed of 10,000 - 30,000 comedians.
It's a very competitive environment. Most of them are work at a part time job in order to make ends meet because the income as a comedian is not enough.
But once they become top comedians, they earn over million dollars and gain wealth and honor. Almost all of TV hosts in Japan are comedians.
There are a lot of contests of comedy in Japan. Especially, the contest called M-1 grand-prix(*) grab so big attention.
It takes place once in a year broadcasted on TV and the rating reaches 20% every year.n.
